The rules of the game don’t apply off the field in this first Barons novel.

New York Barons tight end Gavin Brawley is suspended from the team and on house arrest after a video of him brawling goes viral. Gavin already has a reputation as a jerk with a temper on and off the field—which doesn’t help him once he finds himself on the wrong side of the law. And while he’s been successful professionally, he’s never been lucky when it comes to love.

Noah Monroe is a recent college grad looking for a job—any job—to pay off his mounting student debt. Working as Gavin’s personal assistant/babysitter seems like easy money. But Noah isn’t prepared for the electrifying tension between him and the football player. He’s not sure if he’d rather argue with Gavin or tackle him to the floor. But both men know the score, and neither is sure what will happen once Gavin’s timeout is over…

four-half-stars

This was an instant winner for me. Hassell last few books didn’t really do it for me. I was hesitant to try this one, but I was so glad I did. I loved the slow burn of the relationship, and Gavin Brawley is everything. Love that he means what he says, and says what he means. Noah is everything as well. Who knew Clark Kent would be so dirty? Plus Football is sexy! About time I can get a sports romance and I know the sport forward and backward. No offence to Hockey, but Football is so much sexier.

This is definitely a realistic fiction story, but a softer side then I’m used to. Yeah, I had some issues with me feeling like every guy is a Michael, Raymond and Garrett. I have a hard time keeping different characters apart when all of their backgrounds are so similar. It doesn’t take away from my inner glee with this story though. It was gritty, honest, sexy and I never wanted it to end.

Gavin is a softer version of all 3 of those guys. I mean, he has a shitty life, and anger problems. He’s on a 6 month house arrest for physical assault. No one outside of Simeon & Marcus seems to know the real Gavin. At times, Gavin doesn’t know the real Gavin. Enter mister Noah Monroe. Freshly finished from college, and out of a job. Not caring who the client is, he decides to take a position for a PA. I really enjoyed Noah. More often then not in stories like these we have to deal with that pesky miscommunication trope, but here everyone is outspoken and sarcastic. Basically speaking my language. Right off the start they are bitchy towards each other. After countless assumptions, we finally see a different side to each guy. They start opening up to each other, and everyone around them can see the attraction clear as day. This is something Noah doesn’t want to deal with again. Falling for his boss. It didn’t lead him to a good place the first time, and he’s trying so hard for it not to happen a second time around. Gavin make me gush so hard, he understands Noah’s boundaries so well. He respects him, and that is how he knows he’s screwed. He’s never loved anyone before. I loved that its a slow burn for the romance. The buildup between these two are scorching hot. From the first kiss to the last scene, it kept me glued to my tablet. Do you know how hard it is to read in Miami? If I wasn’t drinking and partying, I was neglecting my friends to read this. **Sighs**, I really enjoyed them.

Fans of sports romance, gay romance, and Hassell in general will most likely fawn all over this. Can’t forget about the amazing Simeon & Marcus. These are the bestest friends ever! I can’t wait for Simeon’s book! I definitely recommend this book!

About Santino Hassell

Santino was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed grunge kid, then a transient twenty-something, and eventually transformed into a guy who spends his days and nights writing romance with an edge.

Santino is a dedicated gamer, a former fanfic writer, an ASoIaF mega nerd, a Grindr enthusiast, but most of all he is a writer of queer fiction that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.

Standalone Sunday (8/6/17): Lingus by Mariana Zapata

Standalone Sunday is a fun feature created by Megan at Bookslayerreads where each Sunday you feature a standalone book (not part of a series) that you loved or would recommend. My Standalone Pick this week is: Lingus by Mariana Zapata

Blurb
Most people would describe Katherine Berger as a responsible girl with a big heart, a loyal friend who takes care of those close to her, and the possessor of a wicked sense of humor. There was something about her that most people didn't know. "My name is Kat Berger, and I love porn."

When twenty-five-year-old Kat is dragged to a porn convention by her best friend, she's both embarrassed and nervous. The last thing she ever expected was to meet someone who makes her laugh like no other. This is a story about acceptance and friendship, and a love born out of the most unexpected of places.

Title: Under Locke by Mariana Zapata

Format: Audiobook (16 hrs and 5 mins)
Genre: Contemporary Romance

He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widower, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me.

After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly… even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time.

And the last thing they ever expected was each other. But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop… she should have chosen the strip club.

four-half-stars

If you have read Mariana Zapata, then you know you are in for a slow yet well developed romance. I haven’t read one that I didn’t enjoy and this book was no exception.

Iris “Ritz” Taylor lost her mom, and having no way to take care of herself, moved to Austin, Texas to live with her half brother Sonny. They shared a deadbeat dad who seemed to prefer getting in trouble than taking care of the kids he kept creating. Sonny worked a garage, but arranged for Ritz to work at a tattoo parlor owned by his friend named Declan “Dex” Locke. When Iris showed up, she met this Dex and it wasn’t love at first sight at all. Dex was definitely a douche and a naive Iris was the recipient of his constant venom.

This book detailed the journey as Iris and worked hard to rebuild her life and protect herself from the loan sharks her father But slowly, Iris showed her grit as she and Sonny tried to handle the loan sharks who decided to target them since they can’t find Iris’s dad. This required help from Dex and soon Sonny found herself living with Dex for protection. The two got to know each other and sparks flew.

Callie Dalton did a great job narrating this story. Her voice for Ritz had a youthful and hopeful note and her voice for Dex was gruffy, rude and bossy. The chemistry and angst was palpable that I was on pins and needles waiting for Dex to declare his feelings to Ritz.

Mariana Zapata has become one of my new favorites for a meaningful adult-ish romance (not overly sexy) with characters that are entertaining. I think this is my second favorite book from her so far.

I’ve become an expert at avoiding things that could hurt me—which means I will figure out how to stay away from Marco Leone.

Seventeen-year-old Frankie Devereux would do anything to forget the past. Haunted by the memory of her boyfriend’s death, she lives her life by one dangerous rule: Nothing matters. At least, that’s what Frankie tells herself after a reckless mistake forces her to leave her privileged life in the Heights to move in with her dad—an undercover cop. She transfers to a public high school in the Downs, where fistfights don’t faze anyone and illegal street racing is more popular than football.

Marco Leone is the fastest street racer in the Downs. Tough, sexy, and hypnotic, he makes it impossible for Frankie to ignore him—and how he makes her feel. But the risks Marco takes for his family could have devastating consequences for them both. When Frankie discovers his secret, she has to make a choice. Will she let the pain of the past determine her future? Or will she risk what little she has left to follow her heart?

five-stars

This book featured one of my favorite romance tropes: good girl falls for bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. But what made it so enjoyable was the visceral writing of Kami Garcia. I felt like I actually knew these kids and I couldn’t help but hope they had what it took to overcome their obstacles.

Frankie Devereux was a seventeen year old forced to move in with her police officer dad due to some bad choices and actions on her part. While at her new school, she met Marco Leone, the resident bad boy that everyone warned her to stay away from. As fate often does, situations kept bring them together and revealing that each character was more than the image the exuded to the world.

The author did a great job of developing the characters and the story was so captivating. It had just the right amount of angst, suspense, cuteness and hope that I fell in love with this book. I hope the author will consider doing a sequel on the supporting characters because the friends all had things going worth exploring.

This book was just what I need to remind me what I loved about new adult romances.

Warning: This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

four-stars

This book was an emotional roller coaster that kind of ended well, but the subject matter was HEAVY. I am glad that I read it though I probably will never read it again.

Christopher Barlow was a former marine floundering after he was maimed by an IED. He was forced to get counseling after a suicide attempt as well as his continuing PTSD battle. During his group therapy, he met several people including: Jillian Martel, a woman going blind, Barbara Stiles, a woman who had attempted suicide a few times due to sexual abuse trauma and Connor McCann, a young guy who had less than a year to live. To help Connor tick off items on his bucket list, the therapy group went on a road trip.

This trip began the bonding that allowed each character to make themselves vulnerable to the other members of their group. Most of the stories were sad but I was also in awe at the strength that each of them exhibited as they tried to deal with their depression.

I haven’t read anything like this from Sawyer Bennett and I am surprised that she tried this. I will give her kudos because the story shows bravery, real life issues and the uncomfortable reality of many people struggling with being less than “society perfect”. I put it down a few times to decompress but I am glad that I finished it. There was light at the end of the tunnel and it was worth it to finish this book.

five-stars

This is legit my face every time I see Ilona Andrews name coming up with a new books. Its utter joy and happiness. I honestly don’t know what I would do if I’ve never gave Magic Bites a chance. I would have been missing out on pure joy. I would have been missing out on this phenomenal writing team. I can’t stop gushing about this team. I wish I could go back and read their catalogue like its the first time. Of course, I’ve read everything two except The Edge series, and Hidden Legacy but that will be rectified soon.

Now, onto this awesomeness. Wow. Words are escaping my thoughts at a high speed. This review is being written 16 days after reading it. I had a fear that I would forget it, but once I started page one everything came back to me. That ending!!! I don’t know if its the end of the series, and if so we literally need 1 more book. I just need to see this com full circle for the Baylor clan. I need to see the kids come into their own. I really need to see Nevada & Connor HEA. I know they don’t really specialize in it, but its there. This book was amazing. So many big reveals in this book. I won’t touch on them and will like everyone to experience them for themselves. You definitely need a friend to sqee with and fan girl! Call me, I’ll be there.

Loved seeing Nevada and her family becoming a house. Such an interesting procedure, and I wish they were apart of my family. LOL. Seeing this family stand up and survive was super epic. We get to meet Victoria Tremaine, and she might have underestimated this group. Don’t mess them with them, they will overcome at any cost. The dragon Rogan coming out was extremely hot. I really want to see Leon in about 5 years! Goodness that kid is amazing. Never fret, Bern, Catalina, and Arabella are good as well. They definitely take their talents up in this book.

The plot was really good. I enjoyed every single stitch, line, and explosion. I feel like the books get better with each release. I’m choosing to ignore the multiple statements of this being the last book in the series, because I don’t see how could it. It didn’t have the finality to it. Its so much more they can do with this world. I really hope and pray that they will write another story. A definite recommend from me. I <3 Ilona Andrews.

My Standalone Pick this week is: By Your Side by Kasie West. I have read three books by Kasie West and I enjoyed them. They aren't too heavy and I need something light, yet endearing.

BLURB: In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect.

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him.

Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions.

I didn’t think he’d call me back.

I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become.

Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets.

Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake.

A complete STANDALONE.

Never make a promise you don’t intend to keep…

Mona Lisa St. James made a deathbed promise that she would do anything to save her mother’s art gallery. Unfortunately, not only is The Red painted red, but it’s in the red. She soon realizes she has no choice but to sell it.

Just as she realizes she has no choice but to sell it, a mysterious man comes in after closing time and makes her an offer: He will save The Red if she agrees to submit to him for the period of one year.

The man is handsome, English, and terribly tempting…but surely her mother didn’t mean for Mona to sell herself to a stranger. Then again, she did promise to do anything to save The Red…

three-half-stars

I think it still surprises me of how much Tiffany is a writer. Not an author with books, but a writer. Her pen game is sick. I legit after all these books, still get surprised and awed by her writing. Don’t know why, but it is. When one says erotica, I think they picture smut. Plain sex everywhere and all over the pages. When I hear Tiffany Resiz writing erotica, I stop and think what else? Not just smut, but the story. What will she accomplish? What do I expect to feel after reading this? I finished it, and guess conflicted is my feelings. I liked it up until the middle portion of the story, and liked the ending. For me, Mona is not a Tiffany woman in my head. I know many are going to be confused by that. Resiz writes strong women. They are fearless, amazing, and wondrous. I guess I’m thrown because Mona seemed the most vulnerable out the harem of women in Resiz’s work. Again, this is all my thoughts and feelings. I don’t expect people to agree with how I feel, but something was missing to me. I didn’t see her as the strong heroine that I see in other writings. The problem is probably because Mona was dictated to. I didn’t understand the compulsion for Malcolm at times, and it threw me for a loop.

Mona would do anything for The Red. Its all that’s left of her mother gallery. Its now Mona and she needs to do anything to keep it afloat. Meeting Malcolm wasn’t in her plans. Going along with his plans didn’t seem like the Mona she knew herself. She did it, experienced new highs and lows. The writing draws you into the story and closing my eyes I can picture standing on the outside watching the scenes play out. There are some repeat worthy scenes that I felt myself going back to re-read at multiple times. I love that Mona seems to find herself, accept herself, her wants, desires. I like the Mona chews out this guy in the book. It’s hands down one of my favorite moments in writing, ever.

Erotica is not something I would go to. To be honest, I only requested it was because of the author. I’m disappointed. It wasn’t my favorite thing written but I enjoyed it nonetheless! I think fans of Resiz and erotica everywhere would really like this.

Leslie fell in love with romance when she first picked up a scrappy, dog-eared romance book from her local library. She began writing soon after and the rest, as they say, was history. She now lives in a cozy cottage on the British coast and enjoys taking long walks with her two Dalmatians, George and Fergie.

D.C. Cole, originally an actor from California, has spent the last dozen years wandering the globe in search of…something. Self-awareness? Eternal truth? Magic, perhaps? (Cheap beer, probably.)

Once, on a Tibetan mountain top, he spent an entire month in silence to better understand the sound of a whisper. He spent a year in a small village in the Shandong Province of China, learning the ancient art of erotic mumbling. And one week out of every year, D.C. travels to Sanchi Stupa Temple in Madhya Pradesh, India, to perform one hundred thousand pushups, using only his tongue. (Actually, none of that’s true, but it sounds better than “He spent twelve years getting drunk in strange places with strange people while wearing a backpack.”)

D. C. has recently settled down in Brazil, where he enjoys collecting tattoos and drinking caipirinhas.

When not telling tall tales, D. C. locks himself inside his closet-sized studio and reads romantic and erotic stories into a microphone. Some people seem to enjoy his voice.

Madison O’Connor discovered that her father was using their family art gallery to launder money for the mafia family Karev. Madison didn’t want to indebted to the Karev family and she decided to use her charms on Vlad Karev to attain information she could use to either bargain with or blackmail the Karev family to leave the O’Connor family alone. Vlad Karev decided to play along with Madison’s seduction because he was physically attracted to her and he was trying to figure out who murdered his father.

Their little game quickly turned into more and Madison discovered she cared for Vlad. While Vlad’s feeling was changing towards Madison, he suspected her family was involved in his father’s murder so he still guarded his heart. But soon, even he couldn’t deny that they were in love with each other. Would they choose love over solving the problem plaguing their respective families?

The story is short so there wasn’t a lot of character or plot building. But the attraction and banter between Madison and Vlad was delightful. Everything happened pretty fast but I found the story interesting. The narrator is new to me but I can’t say that the narration added or detracted from the story. His voice was just okay. I did like the author’s writing. I found it was quick and to the point, even though left a couple of the subplots unfinished so I look forward to getting more answers in book 2.
