I enjoyed this story but it was a slow burner as the author set a foundation of this relationship between an abrasive guy and take no nonsense gal. The narrators Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell definitely gave life to the chemistry between the main characters. Their voices blended well together and added to sexiness of the story.
Graham J. Morgan who accidentally left his cellphone on a train and the woman Soraya who returned it to him. When she brought it to him she decided he was a stuck up jerk and she let him know. Of course he was intrigued and began pursuing her. I liked their journey as the other really took time to develop their back story. It was well written and interesting. It’s a book with flawed characters that were annoying and likable at the same time.
I did find Graham to be a jerk to all others except for a few people. There is no reason to have 42 secretaries in a under 4 years. Losing your mom is not an acceptable excuse to make treat others. But the way he treats his grandma and the women he loves was definitely loyal, Patrice the and endearing. So the jury is out on how I feel about him. I liked Soraya and her nonconformist ways. She was a good counterbalance to Graham’s life drama.
This story seemed like it would just be about sex but it author gave it more complexity by adding family drama coupled with broken friendships. While it explained some of Graham’s behavior, it didn’t excuse his piss poor treatment of people. Still, the story was an unexpected delight and the writing was entertaining. It flowed and kept my attention from beginning to the end. The only thing I missed was grandma’s introduction to the young. That would have been a powerful moment in their story. Maybe a 2nd epilogue will give us that part of the story.
I recommend this story for those who enjoy a sexy edgier romance with mature characters. I will definitely be checking out other stories by this duo.

A bond forged in blood. Fealty given to the one he desires above all others. Graced with the ability to shift into any form, Diskant Black is the absolute authority when it comes to New York shifters, and as the Omega of the city, his word is law. Protecting the shifter races is more than a job, it's a predisposition ingrained since birth-nothing is more important. Until a chance encounter with a tiny female sets fire to his blood, brings him to his knees and turns his world upside down. Ava Brisbane is more than he bargained for in a mate-beautiful, fragile...human. If he wants to keep her by his side, he'll have to sacrifice a portion of his soul to establish a bond that can never be broken. Unfortunately, the timing couldn't be worse. Shepherds-hunters of all the shifter races-have arrived in New York. To protect the woman he can't live without, Diskant will have to stand against those who have come to start a war.
This book starts with Ava Brisbane working at a bar that caters to the shifters in Manhattan, NY. After work one day, she was attacked by vampires, and Omega shifter Diskant Black comes to her rescue. Something about her scent soothes all his were forms and they recognize her as their mate but she disappears from them. Once they find the reluctant Ava, Diskant sets off to convince her that they belong together. As they get to know each other, it is revealed that Ava is connected to a religious group named the Shepherds, who are sworn to rid the world of shifters because they consider them an abomination.
Clearly this couple has great chemistry, but the sex was excessive. It was so much that I was getting annoyed. There is a really interesting story and creative world, but it’s getting lost by the constant sex scenes. I enjoyed the writing but I am familiar with this author as I have read other series by her. So I suspected that I would like this one. I appreciate the fact that this series is different from Rhiannon’s Law and the Desire of the Otherworld series.
The characters were also entertaining as Diskant displayed usual shifter possessiveness, without being overbearing. He was also a playful shifter which gave Ava room to be witty with him. Ava’s independence will serve her as I know her brother will be a force in the next book. She has proven that she is no wilting flower, so she will be a good partner to Diskant as the Shepherds continue with their agenda.
I want to read book 2 but I really hope there is more story and less claiming.
