Alpha's Redemption Cover

Synopsis

Tondreau has spent the last four years helping raise Cadajen’s terminally ill daughter, Linea. Though not mates, they’ve carved out a happy life with each other. It all comes crashing down when Linea’s health takes a turn for the worst. Together, they must face the hardest decision of their lives. Will it tear them apart? And can Tondreau put aside his fears and be the Alpha Cadajen needs him to be? .

Excerpt

Tondreau faced him, shaking his head. “You love her, and you show her that love every day, every chance you get.” He frowned, his brow furrowed. “Do you know how many of us walk through life without love? How many of us would give almost anything for four years of love?”

Cadajen had expected the first half of the statement. But the second half… “You’re not without love.”

Tondreau’s frown deepened and he shrugged. “I didn’t mean me, specifically.”

“But you’re not. You have to know that. Linea and I both love you. You must be able to smell it on us, at least.”

The Malorcian shuffled his papers, shoved them into his bag. “Should I bring home something for dinner, or did you have a plan?”

Cadajen couldn’t help but sigh and shake his head. “It never fails to amaze me.”

“What?”

“You Alphas. You’re supposed to be so strong and brave, but the simple things throw you.”

“Love isn’t simple,” Tondreau countered.

“It’s the simplest thing in the universe. It’s all the mating and linking that complicates it, but that’s on us. We scramble it up. You shouldn’t be afraid of love.”

“I’m not,” he refuted. “The scrambling it up part concerns me, though.”

“I don’t think we’d scramble it up.”

“There are things you don’t know about me.”

“Nothing that would change how I feel.”

Red shimmered faintly at the edges of Tondreau’s irises, his Alpha instincts responding to the words.

Cadajen reached out but stopped short, frowning at the material of Tondreau’s long sleeved coat. Wasn’t that just so metaphorical? There was always a barrier between them, wasn’t there? Not physical, like the clothing — they’d been naked with each other hundreds of times. He knew Tondreau’s body as well as he knew his own. But they’d never been bare together, had they? Well, Tondreau hadn’t. There was always something. Some deep dark secret Tondreau feared to reveal and it kept him just out of Cadajen’s reach.

He looked back up. The red was receding now. Cadajen wanted nothing more than to rip his glove off and press his hand to Tondreau’s skin, chase that fleeting emotion, catch it to him and hold it close. Prove himself worthy to Tondreau. Without truly thinking it through, he stepped forward into Tondreau’s space. They were close; close enough to feel the warmth of each other’s breath, the heat of each other’s bodies, and their lips… Cadajen leaned in a tiny bit closer and stopped when Tondreau tensed. He looked up then and his heart shuddered. “Am… am I wrong?”

Seconds ticked between them, the question hung in the air, and just when Cadajen was certain he’d made a mistake, Tondreau sighed softly. “You’re not wrong.”

Cadajen reached for him.

Tondreau stepped back. “We can’t.”

“Why?” Cadajen barely recognized the voice as his own as the word forced its way out his throat. He knew he sounded like a petulant child, but he couldn’t help it. His omega instincts screamed at him to make Tondreau understand, to beg if he had to. “You said I wasn’t wrong.”

“Daj…” Tondreau sighed again, heavy this time, and raked his fingers through his hair. “You’re not…”

“Don’t you dare say I’m not worthy.” Not that. Anything but that.

Tondreau’s eyes widened and the red threatened again. “I’d never say that. That’s not… It’s me who isn’t worthy. You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it to me,” he pleaded. “We’ve known each other for seven years. You’ve helped me raise my child. We practically live together. I love you. I’m in love with you. Don’t tell me you didn’t know. And don’t tell me you don’t feel the same. Don’t lie to me like that.”

“I’d never lie to you.” He opened his mouth to continue, but the alarm on his pager interrupted him. He glanced down at it.

Cadajen recognized the alert as the ‘if you don’t leave now, you’re really, really going to be late‘ tone. They’d set it up years ago, after Tondreau had lingered too long with Linea a few mornings in a row, and the Academy had slapped his wrists for it. He laid his gloved hand on Tondreau’s arm. “Go. It’s all right. But we’re going to finish this conversation. Promise me. You owe me an explanation.”

Tondreau nodded. He stepped close quickly, pressed a chaste kiss to Cadajen’s cheek, and fled, no doubt grateful for the reprieve.

L&I Meet the Maintenance Troll
City Licenses and Inspections log, J. Kaminski
8:05, Thursday, January 12
Inspection of Crossover Tenement #12K-13
We arrived at the building and did a visual of the exterior. Complaints have been received from neighbors regarding strange smells and possible unsafe conditions. Building exterior appears sound. Broken front step. Security door non-operational.
Inside the front door, spotted a handlettered sign pointing toward the basement – “Maintenance Troll.” Our first thought was it had to be a joke and the super had his apartment in the basement. I checked the records. There was no super on file.
There was a strong odor coming from the basement. We suspected this was the source of the complaints and proceeded downstairs. We hadn’t made it three steps down before we heard the sound of a bolt being drawn and a heavy door opening.
“L&I, sir,” I said, assuming this was the super. “We need to do a full walk through here.”
“Come.”
That was invitation enough and we proceeded down to the bottom of the stairs where a steel door stood open for us. I don’t mind telling you in this report that we were shocked to a standstill to find an actual troll just beyond the door. Bob may have excused himself at this point, claiming to have left his CO meter in the truck, I’m not sure I was paying attention.
“Tea?”
It was at this innocuous question that I both remembered how to breathe and wished I hadn’t. Still, I was thankful that it didn’t appear we were about to be killed by a wild troll. Procedure at this point says to retreat and call AURA for a containment and removal but as there seemed to be no imminent threat, I decided to proceed with caution.
“We were called on a complaint about odor. We’ll need to inspect for sewer gasses.”
“No gasses. Just troll.”
“Oh. Um. Do the residents complain?”
The troll at his point made a movement that I am not ashamed to tell you may have caused my own release of gasses. As it turned out, this was a shrug.
“Clean. Cheap. Quiet. Smells bad. They stay.”
“Is there anything you could…do about the smell? The rest of the block is complaining.”
“Try.”
To be thorough we completed the inspection and found no deficiencies in plumbing, electrical or structural. We noted the broken step and started to write an abatement to remedy but by the time we were ready to hand it over the Maintenance Troll had patched the cement and put up caution tape. We still issued the abatement notice for the odor.

Cautionary file note for Crossover Tenement #12K-13: Maintenance troll in residence. Inspection and city maintenance personnel should approach with extreme caution. We do not recommend drinking the tea.

~Excerpt~

“Before Kai gets lost in regaling you with wedding details…” Tenzin settled, then grunted as several flower fairies immediately popped into view around his head to land on his shoulders. “Our lovely Sin, now that we’re among friends and not at work, can you tell me why you insist on tormenting Kellen so terribly?”

“Oh, I dunno.” Sin picked up a spicy fried mushroom with his claws and popped it in his mouth. “I think I’m pretty good at tormenting him.”

Ness nudged him. “Be serious, love. Why do you pick on him? Even I’ve seen it.”

“Look, I just don’t like everyone, okay?” Sin spread his hands when everyone gave him side eyes. “Took me a bit to warm up to Val, right?”

“You had good reason to be angry with Val,” Ness said as he reached for an oat muffin. “I don’t think Kellen ever actually caused you harm.”

Sin heaved a dramatic sigh. “Fine. He’s absolutely useless as a paramedic.”RC

“Not everyone is suited for emergency field medicine,” Tenzin said gently.

Ness leaned over to kiss the top of Sin’s head. “You are because you’re brave and don’t stop to think.”

“Hey!” Sin swatted at an equine flank.

“Oh, dear. I didn’t mean it that way.” Ness flushed darkly while the others laughed. “You don’t overthink. When someone needs help, you just do instead of overanalyzing. Not everyone can be that sort of heroic.”

“Good recovery.” Sin grinned up at his flustered lover. “Yeah, I get it. He’s not the first responder kind. But the little guy’s just sneaky. He doesn’t look people in the eye. He flinches at the weirdest times. I don’t trust him.”

Tenzin frowned as he ladled vegetable panang onto a plate and set it in front of Kai. “Eat, beloved, before you waste away. About Kellen. I believe it’s deep-seated trauma, something so terrible that he doesn’t want to have to talk about it, since that would mean acknowledging it.”

“Tenzi’s so often right about these sorts of things.” Kai took up his fork, toying with his food rather than eating yet. “But this time, I have to disagree. There is something uneasy about him. Something beyond old fears.”

“You hardly see him thirty seconds out of any week,” Tenzin protested. “What could you possibly base this on?”

“Ah, love. A drow knows deception. There’s something not quite right about that pixie.”

Blog Tour: Victory Portrait by Tali Spencer

960x350

Oh My Shelves welcomes author Tali Spencer to the blog with the release of her latest book in the Pride of Uttor series, Victory Portrait and she gratefully answers a few of our questions.

* * * * * *

OMS: Hi Tali, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

TS: Thanks so much for having me visit! I’ve got my cup of coffee here and will answer any question (including any in comments)!

OMS: Tell us about your book.

TS: Victory Portrait is an alternate world fantasy, a world much like Earth but with differences in history and culture. Peta’s family used to rule Sebboy, now a conquered kingdom, and he lives in Uttor as an imperial captive. The one thing he’s always wanted, but has never managed to do, is meet the famous general who conquered his country: Darius Arrento. In this book he does. And he falls in love. And Darius, war-hardened and in some ways bitter, finds Peta a breath of fresh air. He thinks Peta is an artist’s slave and he wants to possess him for himself.

OMS: How difficult was it to get into the main character’s head?

TS: Darius can be a handful. I did best when I channeled my inner grump—I NEVER allow my inner grump out to play—and gave him time with other characters, like Gaspar, the emperor, who is his best friend. Darius doesn’t get grumpy with Peta, except once, because Peta brings out his generous, patient side, the side that wants to nurture and protect. Darius needed someone to be grumpy with, so the other characters gave him ample reason.

OMS: Is this book a standalone or do you plan on visiting it again?

TS: I try to write every book, even in a series, so readers can enjoy it and understand events without having to read the other books. This is especially true with this series, which has two books that are M/F and two that are M/M. The next will be menage. These characters have appeared, and will appear again, in other books, but only this one focuses on their story.

OMS: Why did you choose to write M/M stories?

TS: Even in M/F stories I am drawn to the hero, and I enjoy writing men’s stories. Exploring the relationships between people, including sexual relationships, fascinates me. In an epic fantasy I was writing, two characters simply appeared one day and told me they were a couple. I soon discovered they had a lusty sex life and troubled history within the world I had created, a history and relationships (including with each other) I wanted to explore. After writing their story, I realized I wanted to write more stories like that. So I ventured into M/M.

OMS: Where do you find your inspiration?

TS: I’m not sure where my inspiration comes from. An image can spark a whole empire, as happened with Victory Portrait. Though the fourth book to be published, it was the first to be conceived. Real life also inspires me. I have three strapping sons and two even more strapping brothers. I love to travel, and those locations breed story possibilities. Events from my life have led to what became original characters and novels. Ancient history, mythology, and a lifetime of reading speculative fiction also lead to story ideas. Same with dreams; one of my stories came from a dream I had a few years ago.

~Excerpt~

“You want me to assist the painter. Only that?” Peta asked.

“Yes. I just want you to understand you will be naked and…Brazzi will want you to be sexually aroused.”

“What?”

“It’s what Brazzi does. Not for himself—not unless you’re a woman—but for his method. He was tried three years ago on charges of obscenity because he uses…sexual fluids for mixing his paint. He truly is a genius. His colors are astonishing.”

“And you want Arrento to see me like that? Naked and…being used?”RC

“No.” Gaspar was being firm. “I want a portrait of my general. And I happen to think that the sight of you will keep his ass firmly planted for whatever sittings the painter requires. You see, Darius has one weakness—only one. He cannot resist a thing of beauty—and you, my pretty slave, are the most breathtaking young man I have ever had the privilege to look upon.”

Peta flushed. Gaspar wasn’t smiling. The man was serious.

Could he do it? Did he want to do it? Peta knew he was pretty. His looks had blessed and cursed him all his life. His beauty had attracted Kesme as a fellow cadet and was what Kesme had praised that last night when they’d made love…and Peta’s face was what Lukacz, his own father, had sought to destroy, thinking that doing so would release him from predation and unnatural desires. And now Gaspar, too, wanted only one thing…

“Just sit there and look pretty,” he said, heart sinking as he grasped what Gaspar was asking him to do.

“Only if you’re willing. I’m not completely oblivious to what this sort of service might entail. It could be rather…awkward. On the other hand, it might not be for long. Darius can be stubborn. It’s possible he won’t show up.”

And just as possible that he would.

Peta wanted to say no but he could not get his mouth to form the word. He might never get another chance to see Arrento, perhaps hear his voice. Be in the same room with him.

He’d be silent…naked…terribly exposed even in his utter worship.

But he would at least be able to say he had seen the great man.

“I’ll do it,” he said.

Imperial captive and former Sebboyan prince Peta Kordeun has one great wish: to meet Darius Arrento, conqueror of his country and a man he has idolized since childhood. That wish comes true the day the Uttoran emperor assigns Peta to assist the artist who will be painting the great general’s official portrait.

General Darius Arrento would rather take a crossbow bolt through his flesh than sit for a portrait, until his friend the emperor forces his hand. The notorious artist, Brazzi, uses semen and other sexual fluids to bind his colors—and Arrento is captivated by the artist’s pretty helper. Before long he is driven to possess the gorgeous young man who draws battle maps and whose naïve charm has won more hearts in Uttor than Arrento has won battles.

When Arrento learns that Peta, the slave he covets and wants for his own, is one of the despised Kordeun princes, he storms from Uttor toward a far corner of the empire—where he quickly finds himself embroiled in a plot to tear Uttor’s empire apart. His emotions and loyalties frayed, the great Arrento is in the battle of his life…and Peta may hold the key to his survival.

Book Blast: Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me by Chris McHart

960x350

~Excerpt~

Luis’ mother turned to him and took his hand with her cold one. Her beautiful blue eyes sought his, and she visibly took a deep breath. “I have to tell you something. Please hear me out before you say anything.”

Luis swallowed hard. What would come now? His hands were clammy, but he could only wipe one on his jeans as his mother still held the other. Luis stared at her face and tried to figure out what was wrong. Something bad happened. Something really bad. Blood pulsed in his ears while he waited for his mother or father to speak again.

“The Vampire King from Munich visited us yesterday. He had a proposal for us. His son, Gerome, needs a mate. He’s seen the picture of you at the coven meeting from a few months ago and thinks you’d be a good match. The prince is going to take over the crown soon, and he needs a mate by his side. You, to be specific.” His mother paused and tightened her hold on his hand. “I agreed. A mating to the prince will bring a lot of power to our coven. And the king paid us a good deal of money for the match.”RC

“You what?” Luis yelled, trying to pull his hand back, but his mother held him tightly. He jumped up from his seat and tried to yank away from his mother’s grasp. What the fuck were they thinking? They had to be kidding. He was not going to mate some guy he never met. They were totally crazy. Nuts.

His mother didn’t relent, firmly keeping his hand in her grip.

“Let me go! I won’t mate someone you picked! What do you think you’re doing?” His voice cracked, but his mother didn’t even flinch.

“Calm down. You knew this was coming. Everyone gets mated. It’s the way things are done,” his mother said calmly, even though her fingers still dug into Luis’ hand. It hurt, but he couldn’t focus on that now. He needed to get away before they married him off. His mind raced, turning over possibilities. He couldn’t simply mate someone. What if he ran away and hid? Would one of his friends help him to lay low? If the king wanted him as a mate for his son, would hiding help at all? Or would they find him?
