Sequel to Smoke & Mirrors

In a matter of days, Dex has been kidnapped, tortured, killed, revived, become half Therian, offered the chance to become a spy, and accepted a proposal to marry his jaguar Therian boyfriend, Sloane Brodie. It’s been a lot to take in, and although Dex is still trying to wrap his head around everything that’s happened, he knows he has to move forward.

After the events of Smoke & Mirrors, Dex and Sloane find themselves in one of the most frightening situations of all: revealing the truth to their Destructive Delta family. When the dust settles, nothing will ever be the same, and it’s up to Dex to prove that in the face of change, the one thing that will always remain the same is family.

My Exasperated face.

I don’t know when I started thinking of this series as a job. Its been a lot of information thrown at us, and sometimes so hard to remember everything. I think we are heading to the end of the series, because the direction is going somewhere new. I honestly hope it does, as much as I love Sloane I’m kinda tired of him and Dex being the focal point of the stories. I get it they are team lead, and them being together works for the series. But it’s convoluted now, and it stopped being about the pnr aspect of it and it’s to damn sweet now. I like the relationships and everyone partnering up, but out of the 8 books 2 of them wasn’t Dex & Sloane.

This book had little tidbits going for the next story, and where the road was going to go. Do I think it was needed? No, it could have been a prologue for the next story. I’m at a crossroads on if I want to continue it because its gotten out of hand with the antics. I miss the first half of the series. It’s common because I just had this problem with another series. I am looking forward to Hud & Seb’s book. I hope they get to spend majority of their time in the book being the focus. I swear if it’s Dex & his antics like it was in the other books then I’m done. I hate to say it, but I just can’t deal with it anymore.

five-stars

It took me a couple of days to try to figure out what words to describe this story, but I still have no words because this book has been one of my happiest book pleasures ever. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought we would see Adrien & Jake again. They are in my Book Royalty. I love the Adrien & Jake story. It isn’t nice, easy, or sweet. These two have fought extremely hard to get where they are and it’s PERFECT.

This picks up right after book 5. Jake & Adrien are returning from a holiday in London. We see the old gang, some familiar faces and the love between these two. I don’t think we’ve ever see Adrien this content and happy before, and its a beautiful thing. It wouldn’t be an Adrien English story without someone contacting him directly or sometimes indirectly for help. This time it’s Kevin, the cute hottie from book 2 needs some help. Reading this I often found myself smiling for no apparent reason then it feels great to revisit these two. I truly love Josh Lanyon’s style, and felt like this was the most contemporary story we’ve seen from her ever in my opinion.

Ask anyone and they will tell you I wasn’t team Jake ever in a day. I re-read the series prior to reading this and sometimes I forgot why I was so angry at him, but book 4 and seeing him change was something else. I forgive all the tears, anger, and pain that he put Adrien in. We see Jake grow as much as Adrien did in the years since the first book. You can see the personal growth that Jake obtained because in this last book he was so carefree, open and loving. It was like seeing a new Jake, but I firmly believe he just grew up.

With all the happiness and that ending, I couldn’t ask for a better ending to these two. I am forever grateful that Lanyon decided to bless us with this happiness. I loved it, and it’s highly recommendable to fans of this series.

The Raymond Rodriguez from a few years ago wouldn’t recognize the guy he is today. He’s left his slacker ways far behind him and is now juggling two jobs and school. But the balancing act doesn’t allow much time for the man he loves.

David is doing his best to be supportive, but problems at work and his own insecurity leave him frustrated—in more ways than the obvious—whenever he goes to bed before Raymond gets home. The heat and affection between them is still there, but they barely have the time or energy to enjoy it. And it doesn’t help that Raymond is still hiding David from his colleagues.

The stress mounts so high that a vacation in paradise is filled with turmoil instead of harmony, and culminates on their return to the five boroughs with broken promises and heartache. They have to figure out how to stop allowing their differences to overshadow their love. It’s the only way they’ll make it to forever.

four-half-stars

Don’t even look Raymond’s way. I got this.

Listen up folks, when Sunset Park came out, I saw all the negative comments about the couple. I didn’t argue with anyone, everyone had a right to their own opinion. I’m okay with you not liking Rayvid together. Perfectly fine in my world. It takes alot of emotions for me to fall in love with a character. I literally will read their story a bajillion times throughout the year. My list is 5 guys. It’s never changed for the last 5 years maybe. It’s always Zsadist, Zane, Reyes, Vadim, and Cole. It’s been these 5 forever. When I read Sunset Park, Raymond literally crawled under my skin. He imprinted on my soul. That’s the only honest way to describe the feeling I get when I talk about Ray and read about him. I have to tip my hat to Santino Hassell. The man can write. It’s beautifully flawed. His story telling, his realism, and his emotions are so powerful that you can do nothing but show the man some damn respect. It’s only a handful of authors who can read series and all be high 4 and 5’s. It’s not easy and you might get bored with the same story just regurgitated. I’ve had this book for a while, and it took everything in me not to crack it open. I wanted it to be fresh for release day, and get to openly discuss with my peers all the growth we see in these characters.

It’s been almost 2 years since David and Ray got together. There’s been growth that we can see on page for both guys. I loved Ray’s transition to being “an adult”. He went from everyone providing for him to holding down two jobs and going to school. I loved seeing his passion about being his own man. David is still there, going through the motions with his career that left him feeling uncertain. I really like David. He’s someone who lives in his head, and I know plenty of people like that. David needs constant reassurance about their relationship. I actually felt David was right. He had plenty of reasons for why he felt the way he did. The biggest problem in their relationship was the lack of communication. It’s authentic. Sure having sex feels good for that moment of time, and afterwards but you problems come back big time. I feel like the stress of life got to these two.

Hassell wrote a book that everyone should be able to relate to. Hell I had these problems in the beginning of my relationship. Going to school and work, leaves your love life feeling destitute. I really enjoyed seeing all the different cast of characters. Loved seeing more of Ray’s friends, and even Michael and Nunzio. This was an appropriate representation of a relationship in the real world for me. Can I say it was perfect? No. I wanted to throttle both of them on numerous times, was I happy with the outcome? Yes!! Did I cry? Fuck yes. Was it another baby makers? Check back with me in 9 months for certain.

All in all, I truly loved this book. It’s possible my love for Raymond overlooks everything. I can see myself re-reading it that’s for damn sure. I had some good times with this crew, and how about that epilogue? Oh my goodness, I definitely cried. It was amazing. I highly recommend this series. I think you’ll find yourself enraptured by these characters from book 1 up until now.

About Santino Hassell

Santino was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed grunge kid, then a transient twenty-something, and eventually transformed into a guy who spends his days and nights writing romance with an edge.

Santino is a dedicated gamer, a former fanfic writer, an ASoIaF mega nerd, a Grindr enthusiast, but most of all he is a writer of queer fiction that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.

2nd Edition

In a world where a werecat virus has changed society, Roan McKichan, a born infected and ex-cop, works as a private detective trying to solve crimes involving other infecteds.

Until recently, Roan was ahead of the curve when it came to reining in the lion that lives inside him. Now his control is slipping at the worst possible times. A new drug has hit the streets—one that triggers unscheduled changes in infected users. Street hustler Holden Krause gets attacked by one of his clients, then is surprised to find himself involved in an unwanted, unexpected relationship. And a serial killer begins targeting infecteds in their cat form—something that’s 100 percent legal.

To stop the murders, Roan has to work outside the law. But his newfound thirst for violence makes him worry he might be more like the killer than he thought, and his reluctance to talk about it with his husband, Dylan, puts an extra strain on their relationship. So Roan isn’t just fighting the killer and struggling with his mutating virus… he’s trying to save himself.

1st Edition published by Dreamspinner Press, October 2012.

four-half-stars

I wanted to Sam & Dean this book by the end of it. I wanted someone to care enough to tell Roan to stop. Jeez, no one asked him to stop and evaluate. Sure he’s going to look at you crazy but so what!  I wanted to grab Roan, and drive up to Vancouver to get away from all the madness. But I can’t because I’m guessing he’s meant to go through this situation for the end of the series.

I’m going to need serious counseling after this series. I finished the book feeling melancholy. I’m so debating if reading the last two books are worth it at this point. I am at a lost of words after reading this. I mean Roan has been dealing with the virus for so long, and for it turn it’s back on him at this point was heartbreaking. Let’s be real Roan’s being self-destructing self book 2. This is book 6, and shit got real. I feel bad for Dylan at this point, he is giving all his love to this man and doesn’t know what will set Roan off. I don’t know if I could live with someone who could take the decision to off themselves with no regards to you. I’m not even angry at Roan. I’m just sad for him. It was hard for me to read this especially with all the things he had going on. He’s basically killing his own, and no one cares, and the virus is making him the biggest target ever. I will say this though, I didn’t like Holden for Roan in this book. It pissed me off. I was angry on Dylan’s behalf and my own. I wanted Roan to relax and think. He doesn’t seem to get the impact his death would have on people. Holden is another story. We see bits and pieces of the real him, but he is sociopath and I wanted to kick his butt and make him stay clear away from Roan.

He’s been different all his life. He wants to be less different, not more, but every time he turns around he’s getting more different. I think he feels he’s getting farther and farther away from human, and yes, while that sounds like a marvelous idea, it isn’t to Roan.

This story showed once again how Humanity pisses me off. Roan is dealing with himself, and having to kill his own. On top of that someone else decides to hunt his own and the police does nothing about it. I kept waiting for someone higher to say that it was wrong. What the hell is wrong with people? Infecteds didn’t ask to be here. They are here and human, and getting hunted down like the Serengeti. This book was long, and the one thing that I can say is I don’t know if I trust Holden anymore. Yeah, he’s been great and at times he’s amazing, but I’m too damn stubborn to forgive him for his actions in this book. Every bit of the story was emotional for me. It was darker and more vicious from anything we’ve seen so far. I’m actually scared because this ended in a cliffhanger and if I think this was bad then 7 is probably going to cause me to go for fluff for a week.

When Griffin’s past collides with his present, will it cost the lives of everyone he loves?

Between the threat of a world-ending invasion from the Outside and unwelcome revelations about his own nature, Percival Endicott Whyborne is under a great deal of strain. His husband, Griffin Flaherty, wants to help—but how can he, when Whyborne won’t tell him what’s wrong?

When a man from Griffin’s past murders a sorcerer, the situation grows even more dire. Once a simple farmer from Griffin’s hometown of Fallow, the assassin now bears a terrifying magical corruption, one whose nature even Whyborne can’t explain.

To keep Griffin’s estranged mother safe, they must travel to a dying town in Kansas. But as drought withers the crops of Fallow, a sinister cult sinks its roots deep into the arid soil. And if the cult’s foul harvest isn’t stopped in time, Fallow will be only the first city to fall.

Fallow is the eighth book in the Whyborne & Griffin series, where magic, mystery, and m/m romance collide with Victorian era America.

five-stars

I honestly feel like, after every book JLH finishes she gives herself one of these.

I don’t know what her method is, but keep doing it. Did we really expect anything else from her? This book was so freaking good. The gang is back to help save the inhabitants of Fallow, Kansas this time. Every time I read a JLH book it’s like going on a vivid journey that you never want to end. It’s how I feel after all her books. I always look at the percentage hoping and pleading that it never makes it to 100%

This installment was no different. Still reeling from the catastrophe of book #7, Whyborne is adamant about keeping his revelations to himself. He’s trying to protect the people of Widdershins, and doing it by keeping himself closed off. Of course Griffin notices his Ival’s problems. He wouldn’t be a good husband if he didn’t notice. This was a perfect setup to a story revolving around Griffin’s past. His family issues never were resolved enough for him, and when dastardly things come to play in Kansas the gang makes their way there.

The game is on. As soon as they reach Fallow things take off. As usual Hawk weaves a fabulous tale, I’m excited happy with all the outcomes in this book. It’s book 8 and the magic of Whyborne and Griffin is still new and joyous to me as a reader. I love Hawk’s diversity as usual. Her pen game is amazing, and I don’t think I’ve read a better thought out series then this. I won’t go into the plot and spoil it for people, but this was close on so many levels to breaking my heart. I love seeing the gang turn things up and come to the rescue. I loved this book, and look forward to more from her!

Greg Dwyer and Kyrie Li are living the glorious couple life in New York City. Or are they? When struggling actor Kyrie lands a modeling job, he’s ecstatic to have extra cash to spend on his best-friend-turned-boyfriend.

Of course, Greg is suspicious Anders Berglund, the gorgeous and androgynous Swedish cover model the designers love to pair with Kyrie, is after his man. And maybe Kyrie encourages a growing closeness with the guy?

Greg is probably to blame if Kyrie is drawn to the openly gay and seriously beautiful Andy. With Andy, Kyrie can be himself, as loud and proud as he’s always been. But Greg’s sexuality stays firmly locked in the closest except when he’s with Kyrie’s supportive family or alone with the man he loves.

To make matters worse, Greg’s out-of-touch mom meets with financial ruin and moves in with the couple, forcing him into the closet in his own home.

Can Greg find a way to stand up to Mommy Dearest and win back a love he fought so hard to reach? He discovers the road to pride begins at home and with accepting oneself first. Otherwise, it’s just a dead-end street.

four-stars

I’ve enjoyed this series so far to date. I jumped on a chance to read Kyrie & Greg’s second book. They are not living together after fighting their feelings to one another. Up in New York Kyrie is still Kyrie. He’s working on his acting, but gets the chance to model with a well known fashion model. I loved Andy and can’t wait for his book. Greg is being supportive as best as he knows how to. I wanted to smack Greg a billion of times in this book. His jealously, the disrespect to Kyrie, and his overall Bitchassness.

Yes I called him out on it. No I didn’t want him to out his self when he wasn’t ready, but to minimize your relationship with Kyrie and make him feel insignificant because your wacko mother in in town is a no no. You don’t even like her, and yeah I know she’s birth you but Kyrie is a special man to put up with all of Greg’s flaws. I do like them together, but I feel like they bring the best out of each other.

To the plot that was in the story was a little OTT, but I dealt with it. I did enjoy the story alot. I can read about these two forever. I did get happy with Greg in the end. I mean everything had to happen on his own terms and I’m glad Kyrie was adult enough to let them play out even if he was mad and disappointed. I feel like we should get another book for them based on the events at the end. I’m happy with Andy’s story being next, but a novella for these two will definitely suffice!

Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me today as we continue counting down to the release of THIRDS Beyond the Books: Volume 1. During the blog tour we’ll find out more about Big Cat Rescue where the royalties of this flash fiction ebook are being donated. We have some fun facts, a chance to get your prompt picked for the next THIRDS Thursday, a mini interview with about the THIRDS, and more! Plus, there’s a giveaway!

So what’s so great about Thursdays? Why don’t I let Dex tell you? Take it away Dex.

Dexter J. Daley here to impart some random wisdom on you. Thursday. It’s a day of the week. Obviously. But what’s so great about it? Here’s my list.

  1. We’re finally past Wednesday and closer to Friday. Friday equals the weekend. Weekends are awesome. Therefore, Thursday equals awesome. It makes total sense. For some, Thursday unofficially starts the weekend. Why not. The weekend’s not long enough. You know what would be even more awesome? If criminals took the weekend off. That way me and my boo can spend Saturday night being all romantic and cuddly instead of wiping Therian puke off our boots. Get drunk and shift in public outside your ex’s house anytime between Monday and Friday. I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.
  2. Thursday is named after the Norse God of Thunder. It literally translates to Thor’s Day. Don’t give me that “but in Latin—” Blah, blah, blah. Dude, Thor’s We have a day of the week named after freaking Thor. Can’t get much cooler than that. Yeah, I know, some of the other days of the week are named after Norse Gods and Goddesses too, but until Marvel gives them their own movie, Thursday’s still top of my list.
  3. In the Thai solar calendar, orange is the color associated with Thursday. Cheesy Doodles are orange. Thursday is Cheesy Doodle Day. Need I say more? Cheese Puffs are also acceptable.
  4. Thursday is also Throwback Thursday which means you get to laugh at old pictures of your dad and his questionable choice of wardrobe back in the eighties. Give it up, Tony. Parachute pants are never coming back. It’s over. Move on.
  5. Thursday is when you get to know more about me, my friends, my family, and my THIRDS crew. Ah, the memories. The laughs, the tears, the sexy times. Which reminds me, Austen, I know you’re reading this. I know what you did. It’s disgusting and immoral. That’s right, you Cheesy Doodle thief. You steal my Cheesy Doodles again and I will end you. Also, stop spying on me and Sloane while we’re getting busy. That’s what the internet is for. That and Candy Crush.

So there you have it, five reasons why Thursday is awesome. Now if you’ll excuse me I have a very full day ahead. I have a lion Therian to annoy, a baby brother to embarrass, a sexy jaguar Therian to climb, and that’s just before breakfast.

Vinnie Delarosa and Ethan Thorne are partners—on and off the clock. Federal undercover detectives, they’re part of a covert task force designed to promote goodwill between the feds and local authorities. They lend an unobtrusive helping hand wherever it’s needed. No credit required.

Vinnie and Ethan work primarily in the Southeast region of the United States and live together in Richmond, Virginia. A mugger problem brings them to Roanoke, where Vinnie is thrown out as bait to catch the man who’s been snatching purses in a city park, but they end up with more than they bargained for. Why is Vinnie always the one who has to wear the dress? Ethan says it’s because Vinnie looks much prettier in a skirt. How can he argue with that?

Expecting to return to Richmond afterward, Vinnie and Ethan find themselves assigned a new case instead. They are to go undercover at The Stroll, one of the biggest gay nightclubs in Roanoke. Someone is terrorizing both the customers and the performers. Could they be dealing with a hate crime? Someone has to protect the drag queens of Roanoke, so it’s Vinnie and Ethan to the rescue!

two-stars

Why do I keep doing this to myself??

So maybe note to self should be: Every book with the words drag queen in the title or blurb is not for me. I really wanted to like this story. I wasn’t able to put the OTT and the disbelief aside. I have no problems with co-workers being together, being out and open without a care in the world, I’d say BFN. Nope not believing it?

Especially in the alphabet agencies, let’s be clear about that. I was able to believe it if they were regular detectives in some Podunk town in the country. I couldn’t get over the two man team, and the drag impersonation for minor crimes against humanity. I mean, they weren’t drag queens for terrorist, or to capture human traffickers. It was B-Level crime with a D-List cast. It started off fine, and then the make believe just grew and out went any enjoyment for me. Either character didn’t move me, and at times Vinnie seemed to be emasculated by Ethan. I mean, constantly saying he has the legs for the skirt, or I’d buy you a new purse didn’t sit well with me. Yeah, that was disappointing for me, but their relationship was kinda good. I mean obviously they cared for one another, and if it was strictly a contemporary romance I would have enjoyed it more.

I was confused most of the time. We didn’t get any past history, or a prologue. Being thrown into the middle of a crime and not knowing left me unsettled. Explanations still weren’t clear throughout the rest of the story. I’m going to leave you with this, besides the relationship( Which Vinnie kept second guessing after being together for 5 years) it was the only thing worth reading and it’s still meh for me.

Paul Summerfield is stunned by the gentle reminder it has been over a year since he and his partner, Evan Akkerman, have made love. He vows to take Evan out for Valentine’s Day. Dinner and sex. Lots of sex. There’s only one catch—he’s supposed to be in San Francisco that week cataloging the art collection of an important new client. No problem, he’ll just change his schedule and cut his trip short by a day.

In San Francisco, Paul struggles with regrets and the fear his love is slipping away from him. Every call to Evan seems only to prove the distance between them is increasing. All this, and a key piece of his client’s catalog is caught up in customs. To keep their Valentine’s date, Paul will have to choose between the career he’s built over fifteen years and the man he’s loved for just as long.????

three-stars

This was an okay read for me. I liked the concept of the story, but would have preferred a different outcome. I liked that this is able to be categorized with any couple. Not just gay, or straight. I think this is definitely common with people being together for a very long time. Paul got complacent in his relationship with Evan. He zoned out on life. You kinda could say the same for Evan. I personally would not have gone 1 month with this between my husband and I. It happens and I understand work, and social life is a lot to balance sometimes. By doing all of that you kinda forget the small things that matter. Waking up one day to your partner of 10+ years telling you that you guys haven’t been intimate in a very long time is bothersome. I liked the vulnerability that Paul showed when he was trying to remember if that way true.

With Paul knowing those things, I just wish he would have handled this Valentine’s Day better. I understand being your own boss, and work being important. But I feel like he could have tried harder to change a lot of things. Cutting it close by even doing the job to me was like ” Where does Evan stand in your priorities?”. I don’t want to blame Paul for everything, because two people are together. I would say that Evan wasn’t happy but what changed from 6 months ago to now for him to say something. I would have liked way more passion and emotions with what this trope represented. Also I think the emotions, and connections probably could have got there if the story was longer, and the author was able to build on the emotions of both guys. It was an okay start for me by this author. I did like the writing style, and look forward to more from this author.

About Kelly Jensen

If aliens ever do land on Earth, Kelly will not be prepared, despite having read over a hundred stories of the apocalypse. Still, she will pack her precious books into a box and carry them with her as she strives to survive. It’s what bibliophiles do.

Born in Australia and raised everywhere else, Kelly now lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, daughter and herd of four cats. After disproving the theory that water only spins counter-clockwise around drains north of the equator, she turned her attention to more productive pursuits such as reading, writing, writing about reading and writing stories of her own. She also enjoys volunteering at her local library, playing video games and holds a brown belt in Kiryoku, a martial art combining Shotokan, Aikido and Tang Soo Do. Her family is not intimidated by her.

Kelly is the author of a number of novels, short stories, and this bio. She does not consider this bio a seminal work. Her books are much more interesting (and definitely sexier). You can view a list of them here. She has been writing reviews of books and video games for web and print magazines for nearly fifteen years. Her book reviews can be found at SFCrowsnest, Goodreads and here, on her blog.

Currently, she is working on several projects, including a science fiction romance series co-authored with her best friend and writing partner, Jenn Burke. The first three books of the Chaos Station series are available now, with the fourth due in January 2016 from Carina Press.
