Excerpt

“I see someone in the driver’s seat,” one of the bad guys said. They sounded very far away. It was the bulletproof glass.

Where the fuck is Zuniga?

I pulled out my phone again, texting for backup, I hated having to do it in the middle of a job but I wasn’t going to be much use to the mission if I was shot full of holes. I wasn’t invincible as much as I liked to pretend to myself that I was.

I couldn’t play cowboy and take on these pistol-packing peanuts alone. Or could I? Go down in a blaze of glory? I didn’t want a life without Lucky. They’d be doing me a big fucking favor if they shot me.

The message came back. Stay where you are. Don’t move.

“He’s texting! He’s texting!” one of the little assholes outside yelled.

“Shoot him!” the guy beside me said. I heard the one sound I didn’t want to hear. A gunshot. It bounced off the passenger window.

They started to rock the SUV back and forth.

Where the fuck is my backup?

I drew my gun out of the holster as I heard the second sound I absolutely did not want to hear. My door releasing.

And opening.

I was ready for the little shit and shot him from my left hand, clear in the chest with my new, handy-dandy, state-of-the art, gazillion-watt Taser X26C gun. His eyes rolled up like escalator stairs and he flew back, billowing out on the ground, twitching with the force of the electro-magnetic impulse.

“Motherfucker!” his friends yelled. They ran toward the front, shooting away at me. I blasted back, getting one little fucker in the shoulder with my state-issue .32, with my right hand. The third little bastard screamed at me. What an asshole.

He jumped over his friend’s writhing body and popped off a couple of shots. One hit the driver’s door. As he neared me, I closed the door toward me and whumped him as he tried to yank at it. It smacked him in the face and I heard a satisfying crunch of bones. I let him have a little Taser juice just because I felt like it. He was on his knees calling me a pig and a honky.

No manners.

I closed and locked my door.

We’d been had.

How did he know I was a pig? And calling me a honky? He was like something out of a seventies’ blaxploitation movie.

I called my supervising unit. Nobody responded. I had three prone assholes outside and an even bigger problem on my hands. Somebody had ambushed us. Keeping my eyes on the road, I realized there’d been no traffic passing by me during the entire encounter with the three guys still sprawled on the ground.

Calling 9-1-1 was supposed to be my last resort but as far as I knew, my partner had been ambushed and the supervising unit was out of commission.

My cell phone rang. I prayed it wouldn’t be Lucky.

Synopsis

Paul and Hamish are at it and at each other, again in the third installment of A.J. Llewellyn and D.J. Manly’s best-selling BDSM Voyages series.

Paul and Hamish may be married but that doesn’t mean their sex life has to be a snore fest. These guys always give each other exactly what they need when they can find time in their busy lives. In between feeding Hamish’s ravenous, pregnant sister, and negotiating relationships with deadbeat, rock star fathers, the lovers are always looking for ways to spice things up.

This time, overworked Paul is in for it when Hamish decides to take him on a special retreat that involves a yurt, a Peruvian shaman, and some noxious liquid that wipes out all limits to the imagination. Independence Day never saw anything like this coming!

Excerpt

I walked out of the plant at two in the morning. It was at this point that I permitted myself to feel it. I was dead tired and it was chilly. I regretted not bringing a jacket but then I hadn’t expected it to take so damn long, or for the night to turn cold. I had to keep reminding myself that for a coastal state, California was desert. Outside, I put up the top of the convertible and texted the office with a reminder to bill the plant and also make a report in the morning.

When I pulled up into our driveway, I turned off the engine and closed my eyes. I almost fell asleep there. I think I would have if not for who I knew was waiting for me inside. Although, I was pretty sure Hamish had conked out at this hour. With all the energy I had left, I walked up to the door and put the key in the lock. Thankfully, Hamish had left the alarm off.

I walked inside, locked the door and set the alarm. As I climbed the stairs I noticed a light on in the master bedroom. Hamish sometimes fell asleep reading so I tried to be quiet anyway as I crept in. I paused, my brow wrinkling as I heard a low buzzing sound coming from the bed. My eyes widened when I saw Hamish lying flat on his back with his slave collar on. He’d attached the collar’s chain to the bed post. Two other chains with nipple clamps lay on his chest. I guess he expected me to do the honors by installing those.

I smiled as I came around to the bottom of the bed. Both his legs were raised and spread wide in the air, resting on leather stirrups we’d attached overhead. A rather large vibrating butt plug protruded from his ass, and his cock was strapped nicely with a studded leather cuff.

“Your hands are free,” I said, my cock stiffening as I slowly ran my gaze over him.

He smiled. “I can fight if you try anything I don’t like.”

Hamish used to be a boxer. No one messed with him unless he wanted it. Right now, he wanted it…badly. “So you’ve been busy.”

“You told me to stay awake, remember?”

“All this for me,” I said, straddling his waist and grabbing both wrists. He was breathing hard as he looked up at me. I wasn’t so tired anymore. I reached over to get the padded cuffs we had tucked behind the bed. I brought up one and attached his wrist. Hamish made quite a show of struggling.

I attached the other cuff and leaned back. “My, my, all mine to play with.”

“I’ll scream,” he threatened with that gleam in his eyes. “A stranger coming into my house to have his way with me. If I make a lot of noise,” Hamish explained, “the police will come.”

“Not if they can’t hear you, they won’t,” I whispered.

I write not only for my own pleasure, but for the pleasure of my readers. I can’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t written and told stories. When I’m not writing, I’m dreaming about writing. Eroticism between consenting adults, in all its many forms is the icing on the cake of life but one does not live by sex alone. The story of how two people find love in spite of the odds is what really turns me on.

Synopsis

When Elliot Iverson, a municipal employee responsible for paperwork pertaining to New York City’s vampire population, knocks on the door of the Gramercy warren, he wants only to resolve a clerical error. But a sudden snowstorm, a new friendship, and an ill-advised threesome force Elliot to make some big choices about his own life and death.

Excerpt

When Matthew pulls open the door, a blast of wind and snow swirls in. The snow is piled up on the stoop, and as they watch some of it crumbles onto the carpet of the foyer. The street is drifted with white and all Eli can see is billowing white globes of snow around each of the streetlamps.

“Okay, there’s no way you’re leaving,” Matthew declares, pushing the door shut again and cutting off the frigid stream of air. Eli’s glasses fog up again, but only briefly, and once they’re clear he sees Matthew turn to regard him thoughtfully. “Even if the subway’s still open it’s going to take you forever to get home. Do you want to stay for dinner?”

As he asks, he leans forward and puts his hand over Eli’s where he’s gripping the strap of his bag.

All at once, Eli realizes that he is in a house with Dead people and vampires; that if the trains are down he has effectively no way to get home; and that he’s being propositioned.

“Oh my god,” he says. This is entirely the thing his mom had fretted about, at length, when he announced his intention to move to New York. Because con-artists, homosexuals, anarchists, and vampires. It’s her worst nightmare. Maybe there are drug dealers here too.

Matthew tips his head curiously.

“Oh my god,” Eli says, more frantically. “Oh my god. I can’t get home.”

“Yeah?” Matthew asks, nonplussed.

“Horror stories start like this!”

Werewolves of Chernobyl by K.A. Merikan and L.A. Witt

Being kidnapped by two werewolves is an adventure after all, right? Right?! —

Quinn

If Quinn wants to get the best photos for his travel blog, no gate is too tall, and no ‘do not enter’ sign actually means he won’t go in. What he finds in a hidden exclusion zone by Chernobyl blows his mind. Mutants? Monsters? He doesn’t know, but he is bound to find out when not one but two of them break into his hotel.
Too bad the rules and attitudes they have toward sex don’t match Quinn’s at all.

Dima

Born with a disabled hand, smaller than the other werewolves, Dima is the lowest of the low in his pack, but when he meets the loveliest human he’s ever seen, he knows his luck has changed.
The last thing he expects though is his beloved friend Nazar turning on him once Dima’s affection for Quinn deepens, and he refuses to be mounted by Nazar anymore.

Nazar

Nazar is a high ranking soldier in his pack, but in his powerful body hides a gentle soul, and all he wants is to escape the pack with Dima. But once Dima claims Quinn as his, secrets Nazar has so far kept hidden rear their ugly head.

The werewolf language doesn’t have words to describe what they crave, so Quinn might be the only one to help them solve the puzzle of the desires that go against the rules of their pack.

four-half-stars

I don’t know where to start with this or how to even say what I want to about this book. I mean, when I saw the book it looked good but then I saw the Pinterest board for it and I won’t lie, I drooled. I mean, the image inspiration for Quinn was enough to get me going – I’m a sucker for hipsters – and then you have Nazar and Dima? Yeah, sign me up for this ASAP.

But then… I started reading and I had to stop reading to google a few things and I learned about a new form of werewolf called a bodark and then I had to stop again and consider what I pretty much knew was going to happen. Well, I can tell you I decided to keep reading and holy mother effing cow, what I thought would happen, did happen and oh boy, was it hot. Like ridiculously hot to the point I should probably be ashamed that I found it so hot but screw it, I own all my kinks and this is just a new one I’ve found. Oh and yeah, there is KNOTTING in this book and be prepared, it’s pretty hot. Have I mentioned this was hot yet? Just making sure.

Now I have always said that any subject can be read as long as you have a good writer and I didn’t just have one in this story, I had three and I had three different POV’s that I adored.

We meet Quinn while on a tour of Chernobyl, the horrible nuclear power plant in Pripyat (then in Russia which is now Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union) that housed on of the worst nuclear accidents in history. The tour guides strongly insist that no one go to black zones on the map but Quinn, he is all about the anarchy and arrogance with being told what to do so… yup, he goes to that area. While there, he comes upon a creature, something he has never seen before as it appears to be a wolf, yet it’s also a biped though strangely, hunched over. But this creature is curious also so Quinn and it, well they have a moment. I am going to say how I really wanted the creature to shift when Quinn shared a treat with him but that’s just because I have seen too many commercials and my brain is a wacked place to be.

Anyway.

We get to meet the creature, aka Dima, and from the first line of his POV I fell hard for him. There is so much in Dima right away that draws you to him, makes you want to champion him, cuddle him and later on, yeah you want to beg him to do things to you. But Dima, he is this soft-hearted bodark who was born with a lame arm that makes him think he is inferior. He is at the bottom of the pack and would be treated worse than he is if not for his friend and protector, Nazar.

Good lord, Nazar. How is it that we get these bodarks, these werewolves who walk on two legs and have tall the characteristics and mannerisms of wolves and yet I fell in love with them? We know from early on that Nazar, he feels more than friendship for Dima, he wants him in every way he can… except the one way he truly wants him but I won’t give that bit away. Nazar is head over heels for Dima and has always wanted to take him out of the hierarchy of wolves and be free. Free to be whom they want to one another without shame and it’s just so heartbreaking to me.

But when Dima tells Nazar he found a human, a human who was nice to him, who wanted him and who Dima now wants of course Nazar will do anything for his friend and off they go to get themselves a hipster to play with.

Goodness. I just adored the hell out of this. It was much sweeter than I had anticipated with the longing between Dima and Nazar and the complications that come into their relationship once they add Quinn to the mix. It was also witty and funny and downright sexy AF but it was also and engaging read that had me doing many searches on wolves of Chernobyl and yeah, imaging that some of the pictures were possible on Quinn’s blog. Don’t look at me like that! I suspended belief that a hipster would take a chance and leave everything he knows to be real when two freaking werewolves – one who talks – come into his room and want to hang out. So yeah, I will imagine it but really, watching the Radioactive Wolves Of Chernobyl, documentary had a different meaning after reading this.

Once again, I have said nothing with a whole lot of words but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love how we learn the dynamics of the bodarks in this seemed forgotten place and how they teach and learn from Quinn. How the three males learn to be with one another, learn to respect one another in a new way and learn to um… get it on with each other.  I loved how this book made me take a moment out of a poly romance story to look up an actual horrific event and even after finishing the book, take time to watch and learn more about the effects of the Chernobyl accident. But what I love most, is this book took me out of my comfort zone and wrapped me in warm furred arms and told me to just relax, because it’d be worth it.

Werewolves of Chernobyl was a great read about two bodark wolves who don’t know how to move from being parallel in their emotions until a third shows them a triad is the way to go. It’s a romantic story with bits of realism and slight engagement of humanities and injustices that are carried out without regard. It’s a story about being free, being authentic to your wants and it’s about love.

About K.A. Merikan

K. A. Merikan is the pen name for Kat and Agnes Merikan, a team of writers, who are taken for sisters with surprising regularity. Kat’s the mean sergeant and survival specialist of the duo, never hesitating to kick Agnes’s ass when she’s slacking off. Her memory works like an easy-access catalogue, which allows her to keep up with both book details and social media. Also works as the emergency GPS. Agnes is the Merikan nitpicker, usually found busy with formatting and research. Her attention tends to be scattered, and despite pushing thirty, she needs to apply makeup to buy alcohol. Self-proclaimed queen of the roads.

They love the weird and wonderful, stepping out of the box, and bending stereotypes both in life and books. When you pick up a Merikan book, there’s one thing you can be sure of – it will be full of surprises.

About L.A. Witt

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn’t lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies.

She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut…

Excerpt

Summer held its grip on the city, even though it was November and the Christmas crush had started. Every hour on the hour, the song Let it Snow played on the piped music system of the Grove at Farmer’s Market. Fake snow fell from strategic spots on roofs and lampposts. It was so goofy when the weather was so unseasonably warm.

Lucky laughed as fake snowdrops landed on my cheeks. This outdoor complex, less than a mile from our house, was our go-to place and we loved it. We liked the fish family, as we always called them. We could never decide on the daily specials because everything was wonderful and dirt cheap.

The waitresses laughed with Lucky. Their hopeful stares faltered as he brushed white flakes from my nose and kissed me. There was no mistaking we were lovers. I veered between wanting people to know he was mine and keeping a safe, respectable appearance.

Stunned at the array of food they’d plied him with, I felt a wave of fury riding high in me.

“They gave you Shrimp Louie?” I asked, feeling a stab of jealousy.

“Fat free dressing,” he said.

I laughed. “My baby inhales French fries but likes fat free dressing.”

“Of course. You know I pick my carbs. Say, let’s finish this. I smell the caramel corn popping.”

We ate in silence. We never ran out of things to talk about. It was our first awkward moment together. Ever. It took me by surprise because we never stopped moving our lips. They were either on each other’s mouths, asses, or cocks, arranged around food or great conversation. But we sat, both so quiet, the weight of truth hanging like a steel wrecking ball between us.

He decided to kick the ball.

“Jack, it’s only a few weeks. We’ll be together for Thanksgiving, one way or another.”

“Fuck. It sucks.”

“Yeah, it sucks. But think how much fun we’re gonna have when we meet up again.”

“Shut up,” I said and he laughed.

He took my hand. “Popcorn calls.”

We pushed through the lunchtime crowd and bought a bag of it, still warm from the pot. We sampled some fresh coconut corn and bought a pound of that too. We loaded up on slices of fresh butter toffee after tasting tons of different blends. We couldn’t agree on the peppermint bark and chose candy cane bark instead. We snapped up miniature kiwi fruit and persimmons at the fruit stall. I was validating the parking ticket when I saw him open his cell phone.

“It’s time,” he told me. “They’re ready to roll.”

We went home to our little studio guest house in back of a Pepto Bismol pink duplex on Havenhurst Drive. When I first met him, Lucky had a gorgeous house in the Larchmont district. It was an elaborate prop, part of his undercover disguise as a Mafioso. Now he was on to another secret assignment and I would still be here, working with my own team. There would always be busts, there would always be separations, but this was the first.

He put his hand on my thigh as we waited for a light on the corner of Melrose.

“It fucking blows monkey chunks, Jack.”

“Yeah. It does.”

He stared straight ahead. “I’m going to ask you once and lie to me if you have to, but can you be faithful? Please tell me you won’t fuck anyone else. Please…just don’t do it.”

“I won’t.” I don’t think.

Book Blast: The Sarran Senator by AC Katt

960x350

EXCERPT:

::We will need to get our promise rings and Asta glasses, but we can decide where to live and get our rings and glasses later. Right now I want you under me.:: Tarin pushed Sam’s shoulders down into the softness of the couch pillows. Sam turned on his side so they faced each other.

::I foolishly didn’t bother to ask, although I should have consulted Mark, but now that I’ve taken the vial, does my equipment work the same way?::

::Yes and no. Externally you will see the slick that pours from under your foreskin. This enables one of us to penetrate the other and our fem without pain when we bond. Internally, there will be a type of a tube, a Secondary Sperm Valve that connects your channel to the seminal vesicle in your partner. When a Sarran Warrior receives sperm from his bonded, it opens the valve. The sperm goes through the valve to connect to the seminal vesicle where they mix with the sperm of your bonded. It is only when they mix that we can impregnate our fem. Our offspring are born with half of our fem’s DNA and one-quarter of each of ours. After we form the bond with our fem, we may make penetrative love with her or without her, as the Triad chooses.::RC

::I feel foolish asking for such basic information. I had the whole voyage to research this aspect of Sarran physiology. I was concentrating on helping Michael adjust to Sara’s Warriors.::

::You did the right thing, my fox. From the holos you showed me, Michael had reason to be wary.::

::Now I feel like a pre-pubescent offspring in health class, not knowing how my body is supposed to function.:: Sam blushed. ::How do I please you?::

::All the ways you’d please yourself without penetration. Let me show you.:: Tarin sat up, got off the couch, and knelt in front of Sam, removing the boots Mark and Juraens had fabricated for him on board the Brightstar. Tarin kissed the inside of Sam’s knee. Sam moaned. He never knew he had a hot spot there.

Tarin removed his own boots and then attacked Sam’s flightsuit. The one-piece garment came off quickly, giving Tarin access to Sam’s body.

Sam looked at his lover in appreciation. “You have a beautiful, hard form. I love your wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. You are everything I ever looked for in a man. If I had met you before Mary, I doubt I would have joined the army. I’d have become a college professor and lived in a house very much like this with you always at my side.”

Sam ran his palm down Tarin’s side from his shoulder to the curve of his ass. “Beautiful … I can’t believe how lucky I am and it seems even our dreams are in alignment.”

Google_SarranSeriesTarin blushed. ::I keep in shape because any Sarran Warrior can be called to battle at any time. You were in governance, how did you train? You have a hard and well-made body, my fox.::

::In the Senate Gym. I exercised and had a trainer. If I were going to be the President, I had to be in the best shape I’d ever been in my life. The job is debilitating. Although the United States is only one country on Earth, the President of the United States carries the weight of the world on his shoulders because we act as the planet’s police and are the only major power left on Earth. Russia and China have the land mass and China has population, but the United States still has the upper hand in weaponry. We, like the Sarrans, also have fierce Warriors.::

::Being on council is much the same as you describe the presidency. The Elders aged quickly during the war and later when the Zyptz took our fems, the Elders bore the brunt of finding a solution. Our population is dangerously low, a mere twenty-thousand WarriorPairs. If you add the unbonded Warriors and offspring, it is another ten thousand. We need all of these bebes our fems are carrying and we must keep them safe.::

::You have too much open land to police properly. What you need is a type of radar that lets the government know immediately if the atmosphere has been breached, or better still, something that shields the planet from all but our own vessels.::

“I’ve been working on that project with Bron. It’s almost ready.”

Sam was about to speak and Tarin put a finger on his lips. ::My fox, I want to know everything about you. We could talk until dawntine but right now, I want to love you. We’re naked and wanting. Can we make love?::

Sam smiled and kissed his bonded’s eyes. “I was counting on it.”

The Sarrans return home from Earth in triumph, having gained many new Earthen fems, coffee, chocolate, and cats.

Senator Samuel Johnson joins his grandson Michael, his daughter Sara, and her WarriorPair on Sarran. To his delighted surprise, he bonds irrevocably with Tarin, one of Sarran’s top engineers. Tarin had been bonded before and thought he would never experience a bond again, yet Sam’s love gives him a new lease on life. Now they only hope the Goddess has a fem for them.

Then the Sarran Elders host a mixer for Sarran warriors to meet the Earthen fems. Margaret Mary O’Neil, Meg to her friends, is a talented woman who fled to Sarran like so many Earth women looking for a new life. When she meets Sam and Tarin, her life changes forever.

But while things are looking up for the Sarrans, with new babies being born and WarriorPairs settling down, their enemy the Zyptz are relentless in their efforts to wipe them out. When the Zyptz attack both Sarran and Earth, the mutual dependence between the two becomes ever more evident.

At nine, her parents dragged her to New Jersey where she grew up, married and raised four children and became a voracious reader of romantic fiction. At one time she owned over two thousand novels, until she and her husband took themselves and the cat to New Mexico for their health and its great beauty.

Now, most of AC’s books are electronic (although she still keeps six bookcases of hardcovers), so she never has to give away another book. AC is a late bloomer, however, she claims to have found her niche writing LGBT romance.

Trevor Dunn has never gone to the Calgary Stampede, in spite of living in the city all his life. He would much rather listen to music and draw comics in his basement than hang out with a bunch of cowboys. When his sister drags him to the Stampede’s opening parade anyway, Trevor is drawn to a cowboy sporting a green hat.

Charlie opens Trevor’s mind to the world of country music and country boys. But then an old flame appears in the middle of the festival and Trevor is torn. He adores Charlie, but Mathieu—a punk singer turned acoustic crooner—was Trevor’s first love, and Trevor lost him by being too afraid to chase the dreams they shared.

When the Stampede ends, Charlie will go back to Toronto, Mathieu will go back on tour, and Trevor will go back to his basement. Realizing that’s not what he wants, Trevor enters a mechanical bull-riding contest in hopes of winning the heart of his true love—or maybe both of them. This time, fear won’t stop him from going after what he wants.

four-stars

Me and this book, we bonded. Oh boy did we bond and bond and bond again. We bonded so much that I feel as if I could tell you about it, or keep it to myself because you know, bonding is personal.

I’ll try to find a midway point and try to make sense.

When the book came passing through my radar, the cover hooked me and then I read the blurb. There would be music, there would be a punk rock singer and there would be a character who has a second chance at either love, or the future he really desires or a blend of them both. That character, his name is Trevor Dunn and he could by my new BFF if only he were real.

Sigh.

Trevor, I liked and GOT him immediately and wanted to learn everything about him. From his instinctual denial to attend the Calgary Stampede with his sister to his giving in and being right there with him as he experiences the parade and all it has to offer, including clowns *shivers* I loved being in his head. When Trevor sees the man in the green cowboy hat – aka Charlie – I was ready for him to take that first step toward something new.

The first encounter with Charlie was totally memorable. I like how ALL of him was described and the cowboy is deliciously dirty. Charlie is into Trevor and in town for Stampede so why don’t they just hang out for 10 days and see what they can get up to?  But while we get Trevor finding some quick ground with Charlie, we learn about Trevor’s first love Mathieu and I was instantly torn.

and it’s all in how you mix the two
and it starts just where the light exists
it’s a feeling that you cannot miss
and it burns a hole through everyone that feels it

~ The Used, Blue and Yellow

We are old from the blurb that Mathieu comes back into Trevor’s life and when he does, with songs about heartbreak, I was a goner. I read through my fingers wondering how it was going to go down, the first face to face meeting with these two after that fateful night Trevor couldn’t move forward with his life and their relationship. I felt awful that I wanted these two back together after knowing so little about their past and I felt guilty that Charlie was there waiting.

Charlie, he is such a patient man with wisdom and simply this essence that makes you fall for him. You want him to want what Trevor wants and yet you admire his live in the moment attitude. The time Trevor spent with Charlie was read with an underlined feeling of anxiety for me. I was counting the days until the Stampede and the end of this “let’s see where it goes” deal right along with Trevor. But while I loved the two together, I am a sucker for second chances with first loves and I selfishly needed the Mathieu deal to happen.

I enjoyed the way the story was told and how we get bits and pieces of each man’s past revealed. I couldn’t tell you who I wanted Trevor with more because at different parts of the book, I felt different ways and kudos to the author keeping me spinning. The presence of the mechanical bull was a fun treat with its reason, resolve and respect for the story.  Plus, I mean;  men riding a bull, gripping their spread thighs tight around an object while biceps strain and torso’s become taught with the fight to not be thrown,  is hella hot. I’m not afraid to admit that.

Songs become meaningful when they’re meaningful to other people.

The music in this was what connected me to the characters. I am a self-proclaimed music nerd and I loved that bands I saw live in my early 20’s were mentioned as well as country artists I knew though I don’t listen to much of the genre. I mean, I think everyone kinda goes through a country phase and I hit mine in the late 90’s. I love the bits of music we get and how they give added depth to the characters as well as let them bond over a shared love.

The Taste of Ink for me, is full of allegories and metaphors, which I found engaging. If you look between the lines, look behind the lyrics, beyond the bull riding and just LOOK, you see more than the words on the page. You get a fully loaded romance of complex characters who find out the blend of the right colors, is worth being temporarily stained.

After a devastating war decimated most of the world, Hudson Lane has only known the oppressive life under her own father’s tyranny. She finally escapes, branding herself an outlaw and hunted by the Enforcers. Her best chance at survival is Connor Mackenzie, an aggressively sensual fugitive who opens her eyes to the wicked possibilities of a world without rules.

As the leader of a band of outlaw fighters, Connor can’t resist the beautiful stranger who asks for his protection. Despite his reservations, he agrees to introduce her to a whole new way of life. But when Connor discovers Hudson’s connection to the enemies of liberty, he wonders how far he can trust the woman who has abandoned all inhibitions to challenge every forbidden desire.
three-stars

Claimed has a really interesting plot. Unfortunately it is buried under pages and pages of sex.
threesome photo: Threesome2.jpg

The World is now ruled by a Global council after being ravaged by war. The council has a team of “Enforcers” that maintain order and rule. Population is control and breeding is prohibited unless permission is granted by the GC. Most females are sterilized when they become adults unless one is born into a protected class.
Hudson Lane is the daughter of an Enforcer and when her father forms a marriage contract for her to marry another enforcer, Hudson flees her home. She searches for Outlaws, a band of rebels who refuse to be governed by the General Counsel “GC”.
When Hudson comes upon Connor MacKenzie and his group of Outlaws, Hudson bargains for their protection. She will hunt, fight, clean and do any assigned tasks, as long as they allow her to hide out in the rebel community. Connor is on a mission to find Dominik, the leader of the Enforcer who murdered his wife and community. So Hudson decides to hide her connection to Dominik.

In this rebel community, Hudson finds freedom both from her family’s expectations as well as in her sexual desires. Connor’s touch makes Hudson burn and they embark on an intense physical relationship with includes Connor’s friend Ryland.
threesome photo: threesome threesomevamps.jpg
The only problem is that Connor is hunting Dominik, the leader of the Enforcers, and Hudson knows it’s just a matter of time before Connor and Dominik come face to face, and her secret will be revealed. The agreed upon “just sex” relationship has become more for both Hudson and Connor, but will it survive Hudson’s lies?

This story could have been really special but it was completely overshadowed by copious amount of sex by Hudson and company. I liked Hudson, she was strong, resourceful, well trained and up front about her sexual desires. I had no problem with her going for what she wanted. Connor was a well trained alpha male, who was so focused on revenged that he glossed over the inconsistencies in Hudson’s story. I liked them together but the oppressive regime by the GC and their enforcers wasn’t developed enough to satisfied my piqued curiosity. Also, the character development was rather weak in this story as the characters ended up being cliche and one-dimensional.

I have read the Off-Campus series as well as the Killer Instinct series by Elle Kennedy and so I know this author is a really good writer. This particular book failed to meet the quality that I have come to associate with her work. I hope that book 2 will focus on the world more and character building. There is a good story here, it just has to be brought to the forefront.

three-stars

I really wanted to love this book because Bound by Law (Men on Honor #2) was my favorite book in the series, and this spin-off was like a sequel.
But I was faced with similar issues I have had in most of the books I have read by SE Jakes: The character building was sub-par, her transitions are jarring (not fluid), and the storyline itself are generally weak. Things just happen and then I find myself in a new scene. Unfortunately, I tend to feel like that when reading this author. But there is such potential in the story and I keep reading because I feel like one day, we will get there. But we didn’t get there in this book.

What I liked:
* More Paolo, Law and Styx and the hotness! Oh yes! The author manages to nail the chemistry with this trio. This is a menage that works and works well. did I mention Paolo, Law and Styx had an anniversary?  Plus, was Styx such a sweetie or what? His guys have really brought out his tender side.
* A Clint and Jace sighting (though brief), it was nice to see C&J are still together.
* I loved the community service that Law is involved with. That was a nice touch to the story.

What I didn’t like:
* I found The MC’s chemistry was lukewarm. I didn’t buy Marcus and Cole’s passion. I just didn’t “feel” their connection.
* I also disconcerted by Law, the jackass, who suddenly morphed into Cole’s fairy godmother.
* The bad guy—how he just appeared out of nowhere, outsmarted 2 ex-special ops guys and a detective time and time again didn’t do wonders for my confidence in Phoenix inc. It was just too easy for the antagonist.
* And then the showdown with the bad guy…*yawn* Seriously? I really was expecting fireworks, but got such an anti-climatic ending. It was just a build up to nothing. At the end, I felt unsatisfied–like I just engaged in really boring sex.

Will I read book 2?
*covering my face* Probably, but I won’t be in a rush to get it when it is released.

When your deepest, darkest fantasy shows up, get on board.

Sam Keller knows he’ll never find the excitement he craves in Middleton, Iowa—not while he’s busting his ass in nursing school and paying rent by slaving away in a pharmacy stockroom. Then Sam meets Mitch Tedsoe, an independent, long-haul trucker who makes a delivery to a shop across the alley. Innocent flirting quickly leads to a fling, and when Mitch offers to take him on a road trip west, Sam jumps at the chance for adventure. Mitch is sexy, funny and friendly, but once they embark on their journey, something changes. One minute he’s the star of Sam’s every x-rated fantasy, the next he’s almost too much a perfect gentleman. And when they hit the Las Vegas city limit, Sam has a name to pin on Mitch’s malady: Randy.

For better or for worse, Sam grapples with the meaning of friendship, letting go, growing up—even the meaning of love—because no matter how far he travels, eventually all roads lead home.

Warning: This story contains trucker fantasies, threesomes and kinky consensual sex.
four-stars

Sam Keller was an orphan living with an aunt and uncle who clearly didn’t want him. He worked in their pharmacy and tried to save money to pay for nursing school until he could get out of their house. Also, he wanted out of Iowa since their small town didn’t handle his homosexuality well.
One day, a delivery man named Mitch Tedsoe came in to delivery some goods and Sam decided to be spontaneous and have sex with the sexy stranger. When his aunt found out, she gave him a verbal tongue lashing and Sam decided he couldn’t take his home life anymore and he asked Mitch to take him away, even for a brief time.
Thus began Sam’s journey to learning about himself and finding peace/acceptance for his sexual desires.

I liked it but the age thing was a bit much for me. Plus, I felt Mitch (33yrs old) was way more experienced in life (especially as a trucker) and that gave me pause with him just picking up Sam (20 yrs old). Also, I think I am not much into degradation kinks, where people want to be “treated like a whore” or called names. I always feel like there is some inner issue at play there. I do like that Mitch and Sam seemed to have genuine affection and Mitch helped Sam to have a nurtured environment to be sexually free.

I do like how Mitch was very mindful to Sam room to learn, grow and was willing to let him go to mature in spite of Mitch’s feelings. It was very sweet and it spoke volumes of Mitch’s growth. I will definitely be reading book 2.

About Heidi Cullinan

Heidi grew up in love with story. She fell asleep listening to Disney long-playing records and read her Little House On The Prairie books until they fell apart. She ran through the woods inventing stories of witches and fairies and enchanted trees and spent hours beneath the lilac bush imagining the lives of the settlers who had inhabited the homestead log cabin and two-story late 1800s home on her family farm. She created epic storylines for her Barbies until it wasn’t satisfying enough to do so any longer (age ten), and then she started writing them down. Her first novel, The Life and Times of Michelle Matthews, was published when she was twelve in the school anthology and took up nearly half of it.

Though Heidi continued to write novels through high school (and still has the Rubbermaid tub full in her bedroom), she stopped in college, deciding it was time to grow up and do something meaningful with her life. When the specifics of that didn’t pan out, Heidi ended up in grad school to become a teacher, and through one of the courses rediscovered her love of romance novels. She began to write again on the side, continued to do so while she taught seventh grade language arts and reading, and when she quit teaching to have her daughter, she took up writing with more seriousness, both as a stress relief and as a potential means of bringing in money.

Many million pages later, Heidi has learned a lot about writing, more than she ever wanted to know about publishing, and most importantly, finally figured out that writing IS the meaningful something she wants to do with her life. A passionate advocate for LGBT rights, Heidi volunteered for One Iowa during the fight for marriage equality and donates with her husband as a monthly partner to the Human Rights Campaign and Lambda Legal. She encourages you to support your own local and national LGBT rights groups, too

Heidi enjoys reading, watching movies and TV with her family, and listening all kinds of music. She has a husband, a daughter, and too many cats. Heidi is an active social networker, and of course has good old-fashioned email.
