Meet FBI Agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong. She's cursed. He's damned. Together, they make one hell of a team.   Emma Monroe is a Siren, cursed by the gods and bound to earth to atone for an ancient failure. She’s had many names and many lives, but only one mission: redemption. Now that she works missing persons cases for the FBI, it could be just a rescue away. Unless her new partner leads her astray.   Special Agent Zack Armstrong just transferred into the San Diego Field Office. He’s a werewolf, doing his best to beat back the demons from his dark and dangerous past. As a former Black Ops sniper, he’s taken enough lives. Now he’s doing penance by saving them.    Emma and Zack’s very first case draws them deep into the realm of the paranormal, and forces them to use their own supernatural abilities. But that leaves each of them vulnerable, and there are lines partners should not cross. As secrets are revealed and more women go missing, one thing becomes clear: as they race to save the victims, Emma and Zack risk losing themselves. FIRST IN A NEW SERIES!

What a pleasant surprise. I have to thank the PKC Feb recommends group because this book was not on my radar at all.

FBI agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong are investigating a series of missing persons. The only connection seems to be the missing persons are closet vampires (the public is unaware of vampires).
Emma is a Siren and Zack is werewolf. So they have to rely on the supernatural nature to solve this crime but it is definitely a complicated case. Then throw in the fact that you have a sexy seductress with a carnal shape-shifter and sparks are flying everywhere.

I found the writing to be smooth and the story very interesting. It wasn’t heavy on romance at all, but focused on the solving the crime. Emma was a likable heroine who did her best to act like a human and respect the human way of life. Zach was also likable as he tried to find his place in both the human and shifter worlds. I like how the author didn’t make Book 1 overly complicated and heavy with world building. Some authors use book 1 as an information dump and it makes the book boring. I think after introducing us to characters, the authors can then use book 2 to give us more background and delve more into their past. I will definitely be continuing this series.

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.
three-half-stars

Book 1 felt like a probation period for Dex. This book saw Dex embraced as a member of The THIRDS. It also saw Dex and Sloane trying to figure out what exactly they were doing with each other.

I had to keep in mind that Sloan and Dex are barely 4 months into their “relationship” and Sloane was with Gabe for over 2 years. So I tried to be patient with Sloane because he’s still grieving. Dex on the other hand, has jumped in feet first to the point where he served his heart up on a silver platter.

I read some reviews where Dex’s humor annoyed those readers but it’s because Dex hides a lot behind jokes, laughter and a jovial personality. It’s his coping mechanism with life’s hurts and he has had a lot of hurts.

Given the drama with these two, I certainly see why fraternizing with co-workers is frowned upon. It has brought tension to the workplace and it clouds judgment. I also wonder how the people tasked with protecting society can’t tell everyone in their organization is boinking their partner.

I am impressed with the writing because it is full of humor and the world building is good. I look forward to book 3 and more about the vigilante group. Face it, the tide didn’t turn until the vigilantes got involved, so I actually like them. I will wait for the audiobook Jan 2015.

“YOU’RE GOING to get us fucking killed!”

Dex ignored Ash and hit the gas, speeding after the ambulance heading up route 9A toward NY Presbyterian Hospital, its wailing siren and flashing lights an unyielding reminder of what he stood to lose. The ambulance had left before them, but Dex was in his Challenger with its own THIRDS installed lights flickering and sending out a warning to everyone around him to get the hell out of his way.

When Ash finally released Dex from his iron grip, Dex had stood on the sidewalk in front of his house, amidst the smoke and burning car parts unable to believe what had happened. He’d been at a loss, watching the chaos unfold as emergency teams and THIRDS agents flooded the scene. Orders had been shouted, the area evacuated, blue and black THIRDS tape marking off his personal disaster zone. And then a bright orange beacon parked near the end of the block gave him clarity.

Dex maneuvered through four lanes of traffic, changing gears and working the pedals. No one knew how to drive his baby like he did, and nothing on God’s green earth was going to make him lose that ambulance. Not with Sloane in the back of it fighting for his life.

Sloane….

No matter how hard Dex tried, his head kept replaying the scene like a goddamn looped video: Dex bolting for the front door, not caring what might be on the other side—getting to Sloane had been all that mattered. He has to be okay. Please God, let him be okay. Clouds of thick black smoke. The sidewalk in front of his house looking like a war zone, littered with debris and pieces of twisted car parts. The trees on fire. Dex tackled to the ground, the breath stolen from his lungs. Ash on him keeping him safe. Bullets flying. Sloane under a piece of mangled door. Screeching sirens and uniformed bodies rushing in. Blood everywhere. Sloane unmoving. A jagged piece of metal sticking out of his side. Blood, so much blood.

It should have been me.

“Fuck! Mother fucking asshole son of a bitch!” Dex slammed his hand against the steering wheel before swerving around some bastard going the speed limit. He was losing his shit. It was fast approaching much like the yellow—soon to be red—light ahead of him, yet he was helpless to stop it. The Challenger flew past the red, missing an oncoming taxi by inches.

“Enough!” Ash snapped at him. “You’re gonna get us fucking killed! Keep your shit together and get us to the fucking hospital in one goddamn piece, or I swear to Christ I will fucking knock your ass out and drive us there myself.”

Dex wanted to tell Ash where he could stick his threats, but he didn’t. He heard Ash suck in a sharp breath, and Dex eased his foot off the accelerator just enough to keep the ambulance’s flashing lights in sight a few cars ahead. Ash held on to the passenger door with one hand, his other pressed against his side to ease the pain along with the slow trickle of blood seeping through his torn stitches. Stitches he’d torn saving Dex.

“Sorry,” Dex said through his teeth. They were almost at the hospital, which meant more traffic. “Sorry for being an asshole and for what I’m about to do. Hold on.” He hit the gas pedal again, and the engine thundered as he raced forward. After a couple of close calls, they got to the hospital before the ambulance. He skidded into valet parking, put the Challenger in park, jumped out, and tossed the keys to the valet guy. Ignoring his teammate’s bitching, Dex called out over his shoulder for Ash to take care of it. The ambulance arrived seconds later, and Dex ran up to it, watching with his heart in his throat as the backdoors swung open and the EMTs rushed out. The gurney swiftly emerged with Sloane strapped down on his uninjured side, an oxygen mask covering his nose and mouth, and the jagged metal piece jutting out from the right side of his torso. Removing it without surgery was clearly out of the question.

Dex followed the EMTs as they rushed Sloane through the huge open glass doorway into the hospital, shouting out codes and medical jargon Dex couldn’t make out. One of the EMTs said something about the THIRDS, and a Therian nurse behind the desk snatched up a phone and rambled something off. Within seconds, a handful of Therian doctors and nurses came running, joining the EMTs as they stole Sloane away into a wide, brightly lit corridor. Dex attempted to follow only to have his path blocked by two male Therian nurses.

“He’s my partner,” Dex pleaded, trying to get around them.

“I’m sorry, sir, but you can’t go in there.”

“The hell I can’t. He’s my partner!” Dex grabbed one of the nurses when a pair of beefy arms wrapped around Dex’s waist, lifting him off his feet and away. “Fuck off, Ash! Get off!” He couldn’t leave Sloane in there all alone. Sloane hated hospitals as it was. What if he woke up and freaked out? What if he didn’t know where he was? What if something happened and Dex wasn’t there? He couldn’t lose Sloane now. It wasn’t Sloane’s time. They hadn’t had enough time!

“You’re not the only one who needs him.”

Dex stilled. It wasn’t so much Ash’s words, but the subtle desperation behind them. Ash put him down, and Dex turned, the look on Ash’s dirt-smudged face taking the fight out of Dex. He’d never seen the gruff agent looking so helpless, and despite clearly having his own fears, Ash met his gaze.

“He’s all the family I’ve got. Just let them do their job. It’s the best we can do for him.”

Dex swallowed hard and nodded. He had to get a hold of himself. It was only when Ash winced that Dex remembered the guy was slowly bleeding out. “Shit, Ash. Come on. We need to get you fixed up.”

“I’m fine,” Ash muttered, wiping the sweat from his beaded brow.

“Yeah, you look fine.” Dex refused to give in to his teammate’s stubbornness. He called over a nurse who took one look at Ash and ran off to get assistance. Ash continued to argue when Dex spotted his dad marching their way. Tony stopped beside them, his gaze dropping to Ash’s hand against his bleeding side before he barked out an order.

“Keeler, get your ass in there and get those stitches seen to.”

Ash looked like he wanted to argue but knew better. With a resigned sigh, he headed for the anxious looking nurses. As soon as Ash disappeared, Tony put a hand to Dex’s shoulder, concern in his deep brown eyes. It was too much for Dex right now.

“Hey. I’m going to take a walk. Call me if anything happens.”

Thankfully, his dad knew him well and gave him a nod. He removed his hand from Dex’s shoulder and let him go. Right now, Tony had to be his sergeant. Anything else would break Dex’s tremulous hold on his emotions. He walked off to gather his strength. He was going to need it.

four-half-stars

Wow. This was another great installment to this exciting series. It was even better than Reaver’s book. If I had to sum this book up in 2 words, it would be Identity Crisis.
Revenant is Reaver’s twin that was raised in Hell. Now that his memories are restored, he struggles with his identity. Who he should have been, who he was told he was and who everyone thinks he should be now. Blaspheme, on the other hand, knows exactly who she is, but has to keep her identity secret from those who seek to harm her. We have two sort of lost souls trying to find their place in the realm.

What I love about Ione is that her stories aren’t typical. She takes me  out of my comfort zone with her out of the box themes. Traditionally, Angels are good, demons are bad. But not here, Angels are not necessarily benevolent and Fallen Angels are not purely evil beings. Everyone’s got an agenda and their allegiance seem to lie in that gray area. It’s so interesting that I don’t know who is truly on the side of good and evil because it’s not black and white. All the characters are evolving, thus they are malleable depending on the circumstances.

Blas and Revenant were good together. His swagger didn’t faze her that much and she made him work for it. I loved Revenant and Reaver finally came to a place of understanding and compassion. I truly hope this series isn’t over after Hades book because I know Larissa Ione has some more stories in this universe. Seriously, I have never read an author who seemed to love redeeming douchebags as much as this author. She does it well though, so I am game for more stories in this universe.

Forced into an untenable position, Henrik is left with a terrible choice--protect the magical Order he despises, or deny destiny and lose the woman he loves forever.
three-half-stars
In Book 2, Coreene Callahan continues the story with another loyal servant of the goddess, Cosmina Cordei fleeing from Halal. She runs into Henrik Lazar, who rescues the injured Cosmina. Together they journey to the white castle, but just like in Book 1, running for your life has a way of creating a bond and increasing attraction. The writing was very similar to the prior book in that the action is slow building and the writing rather wordy. I would like this story more if the author shaved off 50-75 pages.

The characters were really likeable. Cosmina and Henrik were hot together. They were both focused on their mission and they were not looking for love. I like that Cosmina was no simpering maiden and Henrik was no alpha male. He was protective but he wasn’t overbearing. It took a long time for them to give into their feelings, which made the first half of the book pretty slow for me. The story progressed at a much faster pace in the second half and I was much more engaged as Cosmina and Henrik gave in to their feelings, and the dragons got more involved. If you like your PNR with more of a fantasy storyline, then this series will enjoyable to you.

Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.
four-stars

The blurb is a pretty good summary so no need to reinvent the wheel.

What I enjoyed most about this audiobook was the humor. Detective Dex Daley was a riot. He was full of jokes and he was actually a happy person. It became evident that humor was his way of dealing with uncomfortable situations and also relating to others.
He came across as a very caring and thoughtful person even though he was shooting off at the mouth often. I like the world with humans and Therians (humans with a genetic mutation that allowed them to shift into allowed them to shape-shift into big cats). I thought he was a good fit at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron despite having family members there.

Sloane Brodie, Dex’s team leader, took a little bit to warm up to since he was very moody. But once Dex turned on his charm, everyone began getting chinks in their Third’s Armour and soon, Dex wiggled into their tight knit group.

I like the story had insta-attraction but not insta-love for Dex and Sloan. We knew something was there, but they were working towards it. I also like that the bad guy’s motives mirror everyday rationale. It’s stupid but it’s very real. I look forward to what lies ahead for the Third as the gauntlet was thrown down at the end of this series opener. This was a good book 1.

I will hold out for book 2 on audio.

Caleb Donovan was never meant to be a prophet. At heart he’s a conqueror, his appetites far more carnal than spiritual. He’s not inclined to repress his passions and surrender to fate. After all, that’s what cost him Lily—three centuries ago. She married another, because it was ordained. Now that he’s in the same benighted calling—and forced into proximity with her—all the old desires are roaring back to life…

After widowhood and centuries of celibacy, Lily is eager to explore the wild side of life, except now she’s vulnerable to another forced relationship, with an enemy. But this time she’s determined to choose her own path. And if hot, furious Caleb comes charging to the rescue, it might just change both their destinies…

Love is about to start conquering…
three-half-stars

There was something a little underdeveloped and really rushed about this story. Caleb Donovan and Lily Sotheby have been dancing around each other for a couple of books now, but I didn’t feel like they were truly served in this book.

Caleb and Lily were in love decades ago, when Lily chose duty over love and married another. Now that her husband Sotheby is dead, fate has put Caleb and Lily on a collision course again. Both Caleb and Lily are marked as prophets, and they are assisting King Dage with peace talks between the Realm and Kurjans. While trying to broker a peace, old flames are reignited between Caleb and Lily, and she must make the same decision again, Love or Duty. Will her answer still be the same?

Question containing spoilers:
1) How was Guilles tapping into Lily’s memory and how can he manipulate what she sees?
2) Can Lily, Caleb or any other prophet do the same?
3) Guilles mentioned looking into her future and seeing the babe, can other prophets look into others futures?
Why wasn’t guilles able to see that he would be double crossed by Franco
4) Did other prophets have the ability to manipulate people’s vision? How can we trust anyone except Janie’s visions? Can her visions be manipulated too?

I think Caleb and Lily could have brought more heat. There was no real advancement on anything here except that now we can see that betrayers are everywhere. I was disappointed with this one.

About Rebecca Zanetti

Rebecca Zanetti wrote her first story when she was six – a romance between a princess and neighboring prince. The princess fell out of her castle and the prince rescued her. A happily ever after was had by all.

This theme of romance has been carried through Rebecca’s works until present time. While today’s heroine may have a medical degree, black belt in Karate and her own 401K, she’s still after that happy ending. And today’s prince may have fangs and wear a black hat, but hey, a modern princess likes a guy who bites.

Growing up amid the glorious backdrops and winter wonderlands of the Pacific Northwest has given Rebecca fantastic scenery and adventures to weave into her stories. She resides there with her husband, children and extended family who inspire her every day.

SHE AWAITS HIS RETURN . . .

When Regin encounters Declan Chase, a brutal Celtic soldier, she recognizes her proud warlord reincarnated. But Declan takes her captive, intending retribution against all immortals—unaware that he belongs to their world.

TO SATE A DESIRE MORE POWERFUL THAN DEATH . . .

Yet every reincarnation comes with a price, for Aidan is doomed to die when he remembers his past. To save herself from Declan’s torments, will Regin rekindle memories of the passion they once shared—even if it means once again losing the only man she could ever love?
four-stars

This was Regin’s HEA and it is set during the same time with Lucia’s book and Carrow’s Book.

Regin was engaged to Aidan the Fierce before he was murdered. He kept coming back reborn again and dying when he remembered Regin and their love. Regin gets captured by Magistrate Declan Chase, the same guy who was working for the Order and she realizes Declan is Aidan’s new reincarnation.

While she falls for her lover, she is also aghast at the havoc he is wrecking on all those she loves. She has the power to destroy him, by helping him to remember her and their love. But she is so tired of losing Aidan time and time again.

This book was really a big emotional rollercoster and it was a lot of pain for the main characters. I really liked Declan but not like I liked Garreth and the men before. I didn’t enjoy this one as much because it lacked some of the funnier moments but it did have sweet ones too.

I am amazed at how Cole keeps simultaneous stories going on at the same time but they are all their own journeys to HEA. Bravo!

*sighing* Lothaire, that sneaky leech is up next. I am still mad at what he did to Carrow, and the lies he told young Thad. I hope he is redeemed in his book.

This series has become a Top 5 series for me. WOW. I would have never believed it as i could barely finish the first couple of books in this series.

Thank you Robert Petkoff for nailing the narration and keeping me listening even when I have other things to do.

In this series, we meet demon Malkom Slaine who has been dealt a pretty crappy hand by life. He doesn’t know his father and his mother was whore who sold to to be a blood whore to vampires when he was a little boy. He has been used and abused all his life until he met his best friend Kallen, the King. Kallen gave Malkom a sense of belonging and a mission until they were betrayed and taken by vampires. Malkolm swore revenge on all those who held him captive and those betrayed him.

Carrow Graie, a witch, was sent to retrieve Malkolm by the human Order that kidnapped her, in exchange for his adoptee Ruby. Carrow has also had a crappy family life as she never really mattered to her parents. they treated her like she was invisible so now she has been living a life starved for love. When these two came in contact, Malkolm’s heart started beating–she was his mate. Carrow knew Malkolm would help her, but could she betray him and return him into captivity? Would Malkolm forgive her betrayal?

this was like a beauty and the beast story because Malkolm started off as a beast…a sweet, but angry and protective beast. I find the stories where Kresley Cole gives us lykae and demons are just the best. They are sweet, funny, sad, high in action and just weaved together well.

Malkolm has been added to my list of favorite Heroes and has Carrow. They made a really sweet pair. I can’t wait to read the next one in this series

I LOVED IT. What an awesome audiobook! Robert Petkoff was on it again!

Sometimes the timeline with this series throw me off, but the events of this book coincided with A Hunger Like No Other. This one was a lykae lead, not demon nor vampire.
My two favorite books featured Lykae, Bowen & Garreth.

In this book Garreth was playing rugby with other supernatural creatures when he scented Lucia, his female. The one had been searching all over for. He quickly followed her scent until he was able to really behold her. She was an archer, the best archer in the lore, but she had taken a vow of chasity. There was a true dilemma because Lykae had to claim their mates and during the coupling, they had to bite and mark their mates. Lucia’s excellence in archery came with a price from a god–if she had sex, she would lose her ability. So Garreth set off to prove to Lucia being with him, was worth more than her skill as the #1 Archer.

What Garreth didn’t know was that Lucia had other secrets that she was hiding and they were just as big as her gift with the bow & arrow.

These two were hot, they were sweet, they just worked. Garreth was everything someone like Lucia needed or could want. He was unbelieveably patient with her, he was protective and he was sweet. He put her desires and needs above his own in all things. Wow. I loved how he labored to gain her trust and the fact that never took advantage of it. He was good to her and they made a great team.

I am surprised that I am 10 books into this series and I am enjoying each book more and more. Really great series
