SSA Rain Christiansen used to be the agency’s golden boy. It just takes one moment of weakness, one slight, tiny, itty-bitty paranormal sighting, and all of a sudden he’s the agency’s embarrassment. His boss gives him one last chance to redeem himself—go down to Brickell Bay, play nice with the local police, and leave the ghost sightings behind. Rain is determined to do exactly that, even if it kills him.

Cold-case detective Daniel McKenna’s latest investigation is going nowhere fast. Five years earlier, high school student Amy Greene went missing after leaving her part-time job and was never seen again. Daniel is glad to finally have the FBI help that his department requested, even if it does come in the form of his ex.

It doesn’t help that Rain is pretty sure he’s falling in love with Danny all over again—if he ever stopped. Add to that the frustration of seeing ghosts at every turn while he works a case that’s stalled in its tracks, and Rain is starting to wonder if second chances and happy endings are just for fairy tales.

four-half-stars

Dude. I’m so blown away by this story! It was really good from beginning to end. Why not 5 stars? Because its not a series. Why the f*** not? I feel like Rain & Danny’s story isn’t done. Harmon, you have to give us more.

I was really hesitant reading this book, seeing all the high rating and reviews. I put it off to this weekend when I can have time to read sink my teeth into it. I get the high rating, reviews and best of list. I couldn’t tell you the last great book I’ve read this year. This book is definitely going on my Best of 2017 list!

Not only did it feature amazing ghost parts, and the humor was on point. I loved the energy between Rain & Danny. They had some smutty and lovely moments together. It was filthy and I enjoyed every single detail. I loved Rain’s quirky family, but I’m upset we didn’t get to meet the dad. Its why we need a book 2. I need to see what the S.U.C unit is up too. LOL.

Rain sees ghost. He doesn’t want to, but he can’t help it. Coming from a medical sabbatical the only thing he wants to do is jump right back into work as a B.A.U profiler for the F.B.I., instead his boss has him working on cold cases and a case of his choosing. He never had a chance seeing as he chooses a case that puts him back at home where his family is at and his lost love. Danny is everything I love in my broody men. The Alpha dude who is possessive, protective, passionate and a damn sweetheart behind closed doors. They mesh so well together. I loved the arguments, the laughter, the steamy smutty times, and I wanted more. Why did you have to end?

I have to figure out a way to get more of these guys into another story. The writing was really solid, the case was good, the criminals were creepy. I laughed alot and found myself re-reading scenes. That’s how amazed I was. I won’t talk about the dirty, filthy, steamy scenes, but yeah read with caution or a partner next to you.

I really liked Harmon’s work. She’s a strong story teller and writer. I look forward to more work by her, and this is highly recommended! Go get the book people!

The White House, infiltrated.
The president, running for his life.
A traitorous general, intent on burning the world to the ground.

When everything falls apart, who do you trust?

President Jack Spiers fled Washington DC on the heels of a devastating attack on CIA headquarters, masterminded by one of America’s own, former General Porter Madigan. While the world believes Jack was killed in the bombing, he embarks on a wild infiltration mission, smuggling himself into occupied Russia to rescue the love of his life: former Secret Service Agent and First Gentleman Ethan Reichenbach.

Reunited, Jack, Ethan, and deposed Russian president Sergey Puchkov, along with President Elizabeth Wall—the only person left in Washington DC who Jack trusts—must work together. They piece together a desperate plan, hunting Madigan to the ends of the earth and the bitter frigidity of the Arctic, where Madigan’s world-shattering doomsday plan comes together.

Outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outgunned, Jack, Ethan, Sergey, and the rest of the team struggle to put a stop to Madigan and his army. In the desolate extremes of the Arctic, their resolve, their strength, and even their love is tested, pushed to the absolute limits as choices must be made: choices that pit the fate of the world against the love in their hearts, and the loves of their life.

As the world crumbles around them, Jack and Ethan find themselves waging a war on two fronts—against an enemy they can see, and another, hiding within their ranks.

Who can be trusted when the enemy is within you?

three-half-stars

Dude, I’ve been dreading writing this review. It took me close to 11 days to finish the book. I know his previous 2 in the series have been long but it felt very different from this book. This was the last book in the series, and it wrapped up and answered alot of questions in the series. I didn’t necessarily enjoy it as much as the second book. I want to say the romance took a back seat to the actual plot, and all of the copious amounts of information was an overload for me. I like that Tal did his research but, I didn’t NEED to know every single detail. At best, I was disgusted with all the different pov’s, I didn’t need to read it from there I would have been okay with the knowledge coming from Ethan & Jack or just letting things play out by ear. I’m a little let down, and I’m not going to lie. I wish I could cut 100 pages out of this adventure and get some future insight on Ethan & Jack post world showdown.

Don’t get me wrong. I did like certain parts of the story alot. I liked seeing the good guys plan evolve and come to fruition. I liked seeing things happen back home in D.C. So much espionage and treachery was in this story, but I did SUSPEND all my SCANDAL beliefs while reading this. For me, it was lacking that magical feel that I got from the other books.

I don’t want to give away any plot so I won’t even talk about who is with who in this review. I did learn a bunch of new things, don’t know if I will ever use them but I’m glad it went to my mind palace.  I will say Tal does an amazing job with the love conquers all theme for me. Him putting Jack & Ethan through the ringer in this book. I like that his characterization never changes throughout the series.

This book was overwhelming. Not a bad thing, but I did take several breaks while reading it. It’s a lot to handle and I might needed to create a pie chart, but I excelled through. I look forward to seeing some of these people in novellas or one shots if the author see fits. I still recommend the series big time. Tal is an excellent writer, and story teller which equates to good reading from me! A definite recommend.

four-half-stars

This might be the novel version of Scandal. I enjoyed this so much more then book one. I’m all for that, but good Lord it seemed Good never could prevail against the evil in this book. That ending!!! ZOMG, I swear if it turns out to be true then I will find you Tal Bauer!!!! Nooooo, please don’t let crazy become the mole. It’s always the most loyal ones right. This book picks up immediately after the first, it’s not a stand alone and you definitely need all background info going into book two. Ethan & Jack!!! You guys gave me straight feelz. I was overloaded with joy with how fair these two have come, but just like Olivia and Fitz your happiness had a timeline!

I don’t even know where to start. So much information was thrown at me, that I am not 100% certain who is Good and who is Evil. It was so many twisty turns in this book, so many Noooo moments, so many tears!!! Gosh, I didn’t expect the tears but they were out in full force today! I really enjoyed the writing and the transition into each different povs. I think getting the main cast pov instead of just Ethan & Jack’s made the story. It was realer to see from everyone’s aspect. Even crazy ass Madigan. He was crazy but I liked his thoroughness.

You notice in my review that I don’t really talk about the plot, well I think it’s best if you read it and feel it while everything is happening. I mean it’s some really big WTF moments in the book, and yeah I closed my left eye and suspended reality for a while, but it’s fiction and I love it. I’m seriously in love with Fiasal and Sasha at the moment. I swear they better get a HEA by the end of the next book. Don’t know about their counterparts but these two need to come out on top

Ethan & Jack’s love was able to stand against everything that was happening to them. At the end of the day it’s still a romance, and I love them together. It was heartbreaking moments, but I love that they were able to be together by any means necessary.

Now, how long until the next book? Do I have enough time to order a case of wine?

Blog Tour – Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses by Heloise West

960x350

Oh My Shelves welcomes author Heloise West to the blog to chat about her latest release in the Heart and Haven series – Send Lawyers, Guns and Roses – and answer a few questions for us.

OMS: Describe your book to us.

HW: Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses is the sequel to my first romantic suspense novel, Hitting Black Ice.  I’ve sent my guys on a little vacation in the Caribbean, but trouble always manages to find them. Their new friends have secrets, and even their enemies have an enemy.  Oh, and there’s a hurricane, too.

OMS: Have you ever read something that made you think differently about your genre? Can you tell us what it was?

HW: The sheer amount of excellent authors that have risen from what used to be something that appeared to me at first alternative, flying under the radar, kind of–renegade compared to MF romance.

OMS: Tell us about your character’s family life?

HW: Hunter comes from a northern New England family involved in law enforcement and raising huskies. Dad is the sheriff of the county and his late mother worked as a nurse.

Alex comes from California. His mother Alice owns a Fair Trade import store, and his mother Jessie is a Reiki master.

OMS: Compare yourself to your main character.

HW: Well, they are part of me to a certain extent–Hunter’s gently ironic humor is mine, and I have a deep love for northern New England. Alex was tougher–he’s a lot less like me than Hunter is. I do love his grit and determination.

OMS: Describe your past week as a type of landscape or a weather forecast.

HW: I’m waiting impatiently for summer–real sun, not this borderline chilly sun behind clouds. Like waiting for a new release 😉

~Excerpt~

“Ready? Take the beach bag. I’ll grab the chairs,” Alex said. “Did you get enough to eat?”

“Yeah. What’s the time?” Hunter slung the bag over his shoulder.

Alex shrugged. “Who cares? Have a cocktail. You know, to hydrate and pace yourself for a long day in the sun.”

“Let’s set up camp. Maybe a nap first.”

Their bare feet slapped against the sun-bleached boards of the footbridge, some of the flowering rainforest clinging to its edges for the hundred or so feet from the breakfast patio to the pool. The beach chairs were striped canvas and wood, chaise-style. Alex had grabbed a matching umbrella for when the sun was directly overhead. He left it closed, as they had a few hours yet before noon, by the arc of the sun in the unbelievably blue sky. The poolside held a half dozen chaise lounges and couples of various ages. They returned languorous, sun-soaked greetings in English, Dutch, and French as Alex led them to a spot he deemed worthy for their day in the sun. When the chairs were side by side, the canvas beach bag between them, Hunter sighed with pleasure, though he was soaked with sweat. He pulled off his T-shirt. “Do you want to swim first?”

“I’m dying to.” With a wicked grin, Alex slid his shorts down, the T-shirt hem falling to below his hips.

“Tell me you didn’t get a thing-thong!” God, they’d laughed together at the online models wearing bathing suits with pockets for their cocks.

Alex laughed. “No, a Speedo. For you.” He shrugged out of his T-shirt with an elegant, mouth-watering play of muscles and skin, and some of the lounging women whistled and clapped for the navy-and-white-striped Speedo he revealed. Hunter mock-growled and reached out to grab Alex, but he dashed away and ran along the side of the pool, blond hair streaming, long, muscular legs eating up the distance to the deep end. He dived like a happy dolphin into the water. Hunter ran after him and followed with a hurried, sloppy dive, shocked at the sensation of water as warm as bathwater. He wanted to melt into it. When he came up for air, hands beneath the water gripped his calves, and he grabbed a breath before Alex yanked him under. They wrestled briefly, then surfaced.

“Fantastic!” Alex shook his head briskly to whip the water from his hair.

Hunter shoved him, threw himself on top of him, and they went under again.

When they surfaced, Alex said, “We can rent a sailboat. Or a rowboat and paddle around in the bay. Or fish if you want. Do you think your leg will hold up to snorkeling?”

“Snorkeling, maybe even scuba.” He’d swim to the moon to keep Alex happy.RC

“I was born underwater,” Alex said, surprising him. “I even had those infant swim lessons.”

“You’re a natural,” Hunter replied. “Aqua Boy.”

Alex shoved him again; Hunter let himself fall backward into the water with a huge splash.

They swam for a while, joined by the other sunbathers when the heat got too intense. Hunter pulled himself from the pool and sat on the edge, watching Alex do laps. He shaded his eyes against the fierce touch of the sun. It pressed against his skin despite the water-resistant sunblock, and he splashed water up and down his arms, chest, and neck to cool off. Maybe he should have gone tanning like Alex had, because it hurt to touch his skin already. The water reflected and intensified the sun. He wasn’t that kind of redhead, but the tropical sun made him feel like one. Tanning had seemed kind of frou-frou…not for him…but he didn’t want to look like a strip of bacon at the end of the day either. Sucked it up and endured the tanning bed.

Alex swam over and pulled his gorgeous body out of the pool to sit on the edge beside Hunter. “I’m ready for some reading and napping. Lunch buffet is open until four… What are you laughing at?”

“We must be on vacation if we’re planning the day around the next meal.”

Alex smiled. “It’s about ten now. We can eat something light at eleven when they open.” He leaned in close. “If we go up to the room by noon, we’ll have time to screw our brains out until about two and have lunch again.”

Hunter nodded. It was all he could do.

“So it’s not meal times we’re planning for, right?” The sparkle in Alex’s eyes wasn’t about ham sandwiches and fruit salad. “Did you see the awesome mirror on the ceiling?”

Excerpt:

Jamie’s gaze swept down over Felix’s bare chest and lingered on the tattoo on his right pec before snapping up again. Felix had got it five years ago: four soldiers in silhouette. It was one of his favourites. “Um.” Jamie swallowed and started again. “Sorry it’s so early. I’ve been awake ages and didn’t realise the time until I got over here.”

Jamie’s cheeks flushed pink as his gaze dropped again, as though he couldn’t help himself. Warmth flared in Felix’s belly. It had been a while since he’d been so openly admired. He grinned and raised an eyebrow.

Instead of getting embarrassed as Felix expected, Jamie stood up straighter and shrugged. “If you answer the door like that, then what do you expect.”

In the aftermath of Jack Harrison’s release from the psychiatric unit, Gray Raoul’s first instinct is to take brutal revenge on the one responsible for financing Jack’s and Jan’s torturous psychological reconditioning. However, that person plays the game dangerously well, and knows exactly how to manipulate everyone in Gray’s life. To help negotiate this delicate situation, Gray contacts ex-Diadem Doms Trace and Gabriel Hunter. But the more Gray seems to regain control, the clearer it becomes that there’s something not quite right about Jan Richards. Jan quickly unravels, taking Jack and Gray with him, and bringing out one particularly deadly player. Gray is left with one last defense: break Jack down in order to partner up with his alter ego, Martin. But once freed, Martin has plans of his own, and he wants to make it personal with Gray. Complete trust between Master and sub, between Gray and Jack, will be tested to the absolute limit.

five-stars

How am I supposed to review this book when I can’t get my thoughts straight? When I can’t stop crying?

I thought I wanted Gray’s POV and I did, but oh it hurt me so much and you know what? It’s the best kind of hurt.

First, this book CAN NOT be read as a stand alone, it must be read with the series and in order.

That being said, this takes us into Gray’s head and all that this man is. All that he loves. All who he  holds close and all that he keeps inside. OMG! Gray just about killed me with his need to take care of those he loves and take care of those who hurt the ones he loves, but good lord, mukka… who will take care of you?

This series, it is gorgeous and brutal but I love being hurt by it. The triad of Jack, Gray and Jan is so beautiful and I love how their strengths are coming forward and presenting themselves as strongholds to this relationship. The respect these men have for one another, it’s exquisite.

Jan, he has taken on so much and we know he loves the bones off Jack and Gray but he has internalized so much from the rape and torture he and Jack endured. He’s not handling it well and the way he is handling it, shocked me. There were a few things that shocked me about Jan with this but none of it was bad. Just a shock and awe of the vanilla man with soft brown eyes and a sacred love for two kinky men.

Jack, he is trying so hard to deal – leaving the MC, handling Ed, wanting to be handled by Jack and being close again to his soft lad… you kill me, stunner over and over again. I don’t think… I can’t… I mean… Jack leaves me speechless. He really does and while he never got in his head with Backlash, we get so much of him and the lengths he will go to, the boundaries he will push for his loves. I know you don’t do casual Jack, but dammit, I need a hug.

Gray, yeah I still love the bastard and being inside his head was so overwhelmingly emotional. I cried so much through this book and I’m still crying as I attempt to write this. Gray, he does so much and he is so much to everyone but he needs help and that help, comes from across the pond with Trace, Gabe and Dare.

I admit to not reading Ms. Kelling’s series and properly meeting these three men, but I can assure you, that will soon be rectified. I adored Trace and the way he takes care of Gray even via text message. He is there for Gray and will drop everything to help him and then there is Gabe and Dare. OMG! Those two! I need their story STAT (trust that I broke my no book buying mandate and just bought Deliver Us) because, because… they are beautiful.

These books, this series and its mystery are so well done. Pyke knows how to tear you down, tear her characters down and build everyone back together. There is so much hurt and pain revealed in this, so many new WTAF? moments and there are still secrets that need to be told, but Jack, Gray and Jan, they just work together to make it. Just to make it and to be together.

I am an emotional reader and this book tore my heart out. It’s heavy, that’s a given with the series but there are some lighter moments that made me smile but the heart of this series, it really is the love and respect between Jack, Gray and Jan. Oh and holy hell are there some moments that sat me on my ass and made me sob at my desk while I read this. The endearments alone slowly gut me and my entrails are strewn across the room as I think about them as proof.

I have so many highlights that I could share in this review but after looking them over, they are mine right now and I am not ready to share them. I can’t. Sorry.

Now, the blurb does include Martin and I’m kinda digging him now. I mean, see him through Gray’s eyes and you get him, to a point. But all that happens with Martin, all that happens for Gray to nail the bastards that touched what’s his… it’s a roller coaster of intrigue and emotions that was amazing. Truly amazing and that end?

Sweet Saint Brigid!

I am scared to go on but that fear, it will be culled because I can’t leave my boys. I can’t.

I’ll be there. I promise.

With a mounting number of victims, no suspects and no clues, Eve really has to dance quickly to keep the case alive and chase her instincts to solve this new brand of elusive ‘serial’ killer. New characters are introduced, some more likable and some more smarmy than others and entertaining nonetheless. For this reader, the cleverness of the crime was a character as well.

This installment’s a very good entry to the series. There was a lot of sex, it was a fast paced case with snappy dialog and off the pages changes for Eve’s buddies. Mavis career is going strong as is her romance; Peabody’s been bumped to recurring status and gets to show off how closely she’s been watching Eve’s moves. This exciting rapid read wants desperately to be devoured in an hour!

Taken hostage by a convicted murderer while reporting at a prison, Sophie Alton has no idea that the man holding the gun to her head is the bad boy who was her first love in high school. Condemned to life without parole, Marc Hunter finds himself with no choice but to break out of prison after his younger sister disappears with her baby.

Though he regrets what he has to put Sophie through, he can’t let anything get in the way of his stopping the corrupt officials who are set on destroying what’s left of his family. But being near Sophie rekindles memories for both of them. As the passion between them heats up, so does the conspiracy to put both of them in their graves
four-stars

★★★3/4. Not quite a 4 because the heroine was a bootleg reporter. How can Sophie be an I-Team reporter when she was so naive, dense, unobservant, passive and just slow on the uptake?

Sophie Alton and her brother grew up with her grandmother after her parents died in a car crash. In a spontaneous act when she was 16, she had sex with her high school crush, a senior guy she only knew as Hunt. Hunt left for the military the day after, and Sophie never heard from him again.

12 years later, Sophie worked as an I-team reporter and she was working on a story with drug addicted inmates and the pregnancies behind bars. One of her subjects Meghan went missing with her newborn baby and drugs were found in her cell. A man hunt ensued for the missing convict and the newborn baby. Meghan’s brother decided that this interested reporter, Sophie, would be his key in finding his sister. So the convicted murder Marc Hunter set up an interview with Sophie and then held her hostage and escaped.

During this hostage situation, Sophie found out that Marc Hunter was her “Hunt”. He told her his story and she had to figure out if she trusted him enough to jeopardize her career and get to the bottom of who framed him, Meghan and what was going on in that correctional facilities.

What I enjoyed about this series is the author tackles pretty serious topics. And the author goes all in. Not the fluffy stuff. The series is also well written. The heroine was a bit slow, but I loved Marc. He was a stand up guy.

Anthony Rawlings had a plan—to teach Claire Nichols to behave. Claire Nichols had a plan—to survive!

In an unfamiliar bedroom within a luxurious mansion, Claire Nichols wakes to memories of a brutal abduction. All of her recollections have one common denominator, the man she just met—Anthony Rawlings. Unbeknownst to Claire, Anthony has had her in his sights for a long time. Every action has consequences—and his actions resulted in their chance meeting.

Facing incomprehensible circumstances, Claire must learn to survive as she comes to terms with her new reality—every aspect of her livelihood is now dependent upon the tall, dark-haired, dark-eyed tycoon. Anthony may appear to the world as a prosperous, benevolent, kind businessman, but in reality Claire learns he is also a menacing, controlling captor with very strict rules: do as your told, public failure is not an option, and don’t divulge private information. Failure to follow these rules and more, are met with serious consequences.

In an effort to earn her freedom, Claire learns her lessons well and before long, she unknowingly captivates her captor. Anthony/ Tony reluctantly becomes enthralled with Claire’s beauty, resilience and determination. Their interaction instigates strong emotions, including—fear, anger, love, and lust—as their journey flows into uncharted waters of intrigue and passion.

From the opening criminal abduction, through the twists and turns, to the unlikely romantic thrills, the suspense climaxes as Aleatha Romig utilizes vivid detail, allowing this novel to unfold like a movie.

Can you put the pieces of the puzzle together? Claire Nichols abduction wasn’t a random act—did she learn her lessons well enough? Will these unlikely lovers remain true--or will she learn the truth before it’s too late?
one-star

I am torn on how to rate this book. Do I rate it on my enjoyment or the writing?
The Writing is a ★★★★, but my enjoyment is ★ because I didn’t like a single aspect of this book. NOT ONE.

My enjoyment of a book includes love and there was NO LOVE in this book. Not love of self, not love of family. This book was about CONTROL. An inside look at what lurked behind the mask of a rich and entitled man. I found him Merciless, Malicious Ruthlessness and Vindictive. If you want a Jekyl and Hyde, then Anthony Rawlings would fit that bill.

Claire Nichols was a budding journalist who woke up in a mansion of a man she had dinner with. She had very little memory of how she got there, but she was subjected to such mental and physical cruelty by his man, Anthony “Tony” Rawlings, that I wondered if i was reading about Ted Bundy. After all, Appearances is everything, and there is a consequence to be paid for every decision.

I don’t want to blame the victim, but I have a hard time comprehending how a college educated journalist could be this gullible and easy to break. But I supposed that is why the author kept mentioning “compartmentalization”.

I am sorry, but I was unable to compartmentalize this story or the players. I find that I am not even curious to know what happens next. So this will go down as one of the series that I will NOT give book 2 a chance.

Again, I don’t enjoy these types of books and cannot see myself listening to another 22 hours of Satan’s grandson’s machinations because there isn’t a thing I can read that would ever redeem him. I am sorry but I really hated this book and I wish I had those 20 hours back.
