FLAME IN THE DARK – EXCERPT
The sun was setting over the bend of the Tennessee River when I pulled up to the mansion, parked, and slid to the ground. The rear of the place was engulfed, flames flinging themselves out the windows and doors and the holes in the roof created by the firefighters. The roar and crackle of the fire, the rushing of water through the fire hose, the thrum of diesel generators, all created a rush of heat and noise unlike any other.
I had never seen such a huge inferno and found myself struck still and speechless as the fire’s heat and might reached out and gripped me in its raging fingers, scorching my face even out in the street. Glowing embers and stinking ash fell from the sky, burning. I tossed my good coat back in the truck and pulled a hand-me-down on instead. The heavy coat had belonged to John, my husband, and it hung on my too-slender form, but it was something I didn’t mind getting burned, and it had a hood, which I raised over my hair as I watched the scene. I reseated my weapon in the holster, made sure my badge was in view before I locked up the C10.
Three fire trucks were on- site, pulled up in the grass, two pumping water in through the roof holes, one watering down trees nearby to keep the fire from spreading. Firefighters strode through the ruined lawn, each wearing heavy gear and oxygen tanks and fire-blackened yellow coats.
Feds were on- site too, as was P. Simon—the former Green Beret ALT Security guy, from the Holloways’ party—and Rick, his black and silver-laced hair sparkling. A group had gathered beneath the protection of the wide arms of a fir tree. I looked around and saw a small sign that read ALT security. It was interesting that a man with so many personal problems was at the site of another situation involving the Tollivers. I sent that info to headquarters and heard back instantly that ALT was the highest rated private security firm in Eastern Tennessee. All the rich and famous used them for protection and security. Before I left the truck I sent back a two word text. “Still strange.”

Benjamin Vecchio escaped a chaotic childhood and grew to adulthood under the
protection and training of one of the Elemental world’s most feared vampire
assassins. He’s traveled the world and battled immortal enemies.
But everyone has to go home sometime.
New York means new opportunities and allies for Ben and his

A lethal Breed warrior is called upon by his brethren in the Order to bodyguard a beautiful young widow he’s craved from afar, in this new novella in the “steamy and intense” (Publishers Weekly) Midnight Breed vampire romance series from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian.

As a former Hunter bred to be a killing machine in the hell of Dragos’s lab, Scythe is a dangerous loner whose heart has been steeled by decades of torment and violence. He has no room in his world for love or desire–especially when it comes in the form of a vulnerable, yet courageous, Breedmate in need of protection. Scythe has loved–and lost–once before, and paid a hefty price for the weakness of his emotions. He’s not about to put himself in those chains again, no matter how deeply he hungers for lovely Chiara.

For Chiara Genova, a widow and mother with a young Breed son, the last thing she needs is to put her fate and that of her child in the hands of a lethal male like Scythe. But when she’s targeted by a hidden enemy, the obsidian-eyed assassin is her best hope for survival . . . even at the risk of her heart.

four-half-stars

I loved this book even though I normally prefer full stories to novellas.

Somehow the author made this short story feel familiar so the pace was pretty fast. As I was reading this story, I was wondering, who is Trigg, Savage and Bella and what book were they in. I was able to follow the action well though.

Scythe is a Gen One Warrior created by Dragos back in Deeper than Midnight to be his assassins/hunters. He gets a request from the Order to protect a widow Chiara Genova and her 3 yr old son Pietro, and this loner hunter is forced to interact with the woman he can’t get out of his head for the past few months. Their journey to discover who was after Chiara gave them the opportunity to really get to know each other in an isolated environment, which also created more intimacy.

The way the story was written was so smooth and the author kept the tension and chemistry between Scythe and Chiara so palpable. The narrator had a foreign accent that made the characters extra sexy. The anticipation of them getting to get together kept me reading just as much as the mystery of the stalker’s identity. I was able to deduce that I didn’t read the novella prior to this one and that’s where they were introduced. Scythe and Chiara were a pleasurable couple to read and I am amazed that Lara Adrian keeps this series so engaging.

This couple is one of my favorites in these new Gen One hunter stories. They just fit and this story hit the spot for me.

Cop-turned-bounty-hunter Gabe Dominguez is hired to capture firestarter Nat Wyatt. For a dragon-shifter like Gabe, apprehending Nat is easy, but transporting him involves more time, energy, and blood loss than he envisioned. An attack from a band of fairies, an out-of-control forest fire, and a showdown at an auction don’t faze Gabe, but Nat’s innocence might stop him entirely.

Since discovering his abilities, Nat’s lost a best friend, a boyfriend, and trust in his brother. Only his love of concerts and card games get him through life without a home. Rumors of the Judge, a giant dragon who once destroyed half of Canada avenging those he loved, provide Nat with hope of vindication. When Nat discovers his captor is the Judge, he thinks he’s finally caught a break. Through late-night conversations and a shared love of music, Nat tries to convince Gabe he’s not guilty.

Can Gabe continue his cutthroat lifestyle, or will he run away with his dragon hoard like he’s always longed to do? Can Nat escape his legacy, or will his be another spark snuffed out by people who don’t understand? The Oracle, the most powerful wizard in Canada, might be the only one who can provide answers.

two-stars

This one was a pretty dry audiobook. The narrator’s voice wasn’t engaging enough to save this plot or make it interesting.

Gabe Dominguez was a bounty hunter hired to capture Nat Wyatt for his crime of arson. Gabe at first seems like a stoic character but clearly certain things about Nat chipped away at Gabe’s façade. As Gabe made his way with his captured prisoner in tow, Nat revealed more and more truths to where Gabe began questioning his sponsor’s intel.  There was a lot of world building as well as various supernatural characters but I didn’t feel the romance enough amongst the plot. I was hoping to “feel” instead of being told about their attraction. There were too many creatures and the author could have gradually introduced them in subsequent books.

I liked Gabe more than Nat but both characters were likeable. The story just wasn’t smooth and engaging enough and I had to really push myself to finish the audiobook. The premise was interesting but execution was a fail for me.

About Francis Gideon

Francis Gideon is a writer of m/m romance, but he also dabbles in mystery, fantasy, historical, and paranormal fiction. He likes to stay up late, drink too much coffee, and read too many comic books. He credits music, especially the artists Patti Smith, Frank Iero, Gerard Way, Florence + the Machine, and The Pixies as his main sources of inspiration, but the list grows every day. Since age twelve, he’s been trying to figure out what genre is best suited for a strange, quiet kid like him and so far, he’s happy to be where he’s ended up.

When not writing fiction, Francis teaches college English classes while he studies for his PhD. He has published several nonfiction and critical articles on everything from the Canadian poet and artist P.K. Page, transgender identity in the YouTube community, using fanfiction as a teaching tool, and character deaths in the TV show Hannibal. Those are all under different his “real” name, though. He writes his novels using his middle name, Francis, so that his students don’t Google him and ask too many questions.

Both Francis and his partner live in Canada, where they often disagree about TV shows and make really bad puns. To talk more about books, bad horror movies, LGBT poetry, or anything else, please drop him a line!

Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.

Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.

As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

three-half-stars

I am still baffled that Scribe non-Virgin (herein “SnV”) just left her creation/children. How does a mother of a race just bounce? She leaves knowing the Omega is somewhere out there trying to destroy them but she is worried about being worshiped?

I liked it better than the last book but this whole brotherhood has an attitude problem. I am talking Qhuinn, Tohr, Vishous and sometimes Wrath. In addition, WARDen’s weak attempt at redeeming Xcor made this installment less than impressive.

Basically:
✧ Layla and Xcor finally claimed each other in this book and had lots of boring sex. I like them together and I like the change they bring to each other’s life. I wish there had been more to atone for his past behaviors, but he has made a grand gesture.
✧ Baby daddy Qhuinn was having no part of it the two “traitors” being around his kids. He was selfish and self-centered like he was in his own book. He actually shot his gun in the room with his young and baby mama because he was so full of rage.
He said some terrible things and alienated just about everyone.

✧ Qhuinn and Blay also experience marital woes because of Qhuinn’s attitude. I don’t think I will ever really like Qhuinn again. Blay deserves better. His mismatched eyes and his family’s abuse can’t be his excuse for everything. I lost a huge amount of love for Qhuinn.
✧ Vishous is going through midlife crisis and marital boredom. But I truly suspect that V isn’t fulfilled by the doc because she was NEVER the one. The Dhestroyer, Brian O’Neill is and will always be the one and the WARDen needs to figure out how to correct that. But those two are two halves of a whole according the creator, Scribe Non-Virgin [See united by their clasped hands, they became again the two halves, the light and the dark. The Dhestroyer and the Savior.” (Pg. 457 in Lover Revealed)]
✧ Tohr is grieving his first shellan as this was Wellsie’s birthday. So I understand where he is coming from. It would have been nice if the WARDen spent more time on Tohr’s pain and the subsequent revelation regarding his family. I also understand his need to protect Wrath as it seemed that the King is making an unwise decision with Xcor and the BoB.
✧ Lassiter as the new Scribe/Protector of the race is dicey for me, but I will reserve judgment. He just seems too clownish versus SnV’s seriousness.
✧Wrath’s forgiveness and acceptance was too easy. It was too cheesy and over the top sweet with everyone and the baby for me.

Overall, it was an alright read.

I never felt that all consuming excitement to make me stay up all night and finish the book. The narrator Jim Frangione was the same so he doesn’t add or detract from the book at this point. I am looking forward to Throe as a fiercesome villain but other than that, this series isn’t as exciting as it used to be.

Blog Tour: Cold Reign (Jane Yellowrock #11) by Faith Hunter

Series:
(Website, Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads)

Excerpt:
Beast was insulting me so I ignored her. It continued to rain, though the water didn’t penetrate Beast’s double-layered pelt. We had worked in Beast form in the rain before—rain being the normal for New Orleans at any season—but not in such cold weather. Her breath blew twin plumes of vapor into the night. Her paws splashed through puddles and runnels of water. Rain made the city smell fresh, releasing ozone and ions on the air. The scent of blood and vamp faded and I thought we had lost it, but we found it around the next corner, a puddle of blood and rainwater that had no outlet except across the concrete. The scent faded again, to reappear further on. Beast trotted around corners, doubling back, searching, nose to ground, keeping to the shadows. Melting into the dark when a car came past. She was smarter than any mountain lion. Adaptable. Reactive. Going on two hundred years of life would give any animal excellent survival instincts.

The rain stopped. Started again. We passed restaurants almost empty of tourists. Bars full of drunk tourists. We passed churches next to Creole cottages, and we chased off a small pack of junkyard dogs with a single growl. Which made Beast chuff with laughter and victory. We passed cemeteries, the smell of old, old death and limestone and fresh white paint. We trotted beneath the I-10 interstate and were halfway to Highway 90 in what felt like a long way from home, though Beast wasn’t tired, just wet and grouchy. Mountain lions aren’t long-distance cats like jaguars or cheetahs, but in the cold, with the air decreasing the effect of heat buildup, we could travel a long way. A female Puma concolor’s hunting territory might cover a hundred fifty square miles.

Beast stopped. Looked both ways. Shoulders hunched. What? I thought at her, flooding back into her forebrain. I/ we slunk close to a parked car and waited for two motorcycles to pass.

Beast trotted out from the protection of the car and down a narrow alley between two houses. The ground and walls stank of feral male cats, territory spray, strong musky stinks.

Stupid cats, think they are lions. But smell Edmund. He was here. With cats.

Where? Inside the house? I looked around, through Beast’s eyes, seeing the world in silvers and greens and blacks and grays of Beast’s night vision. I/we sniffed the air. Edmund’s scent was everywhere and nowhere.

Smell of Edmund on top of house. Smell of vampires and blood-servants inside house.

He was spying on the house. They came out and found Edmund.

An immortal wanderer. A brilliant scientist. A centuries-old menace written in blood.

Lucien Thrax, son of the earth and child of the ancients, is a healer of immense power. But years of work on a deadly vampire virus have not led to a cure, nor have they softened the wall he built around his heart. When he’s forced to work with Doctor Makeda Abel, Lucien is convinced he’s reached his limit of patience with humanity.

Makeda Abel may be human, but she’s far from impressed with the brooding vampire healer, even if his mind draws her reluctant admiration. She’s learned how to survive in the immortal world, and it’s not by being afraid. Working together may lead them to answers, but it also pushes Lucien and Makeda’s attraction to the boiling point.

When nightmares become reality, Makeda will have to trust Lucien with her life. Finding answers has never been more vital. Finding love has never been more deadly. To heal the Elemental World, Lucien and Makeda must follow ancient paths and ask for help from the most inhuman of immortals. Because even with a cure in hand, the battle has only begun.
four-stars

It’s very few writers who work I would purchase off the strength of their name, and Elizabeth is one of them. Her pen game is ridiculous good. I love her works, and this book is no exception. When I read her words, I’m immediately drawn into the settings of the particular place, and enamored with her characters. I love that she writes people of color as leads and focal points in her work. I love that while reading her words, I’m googling the specifics of each story. I’m enraptured by the places, cultures and histories that she provides as a backstory for her readers. I love how authentic she is with her research, and the love that she pours into her craft. I haven’t finished an Elizabeth Hunter story and was left feeling disappointed. It’s something that hasn’t happened to me, and at the rate she is going I don’t think it ever will be.

I use to want more romance between her characters on page, but at this point after so many books I had to realize the physical side of the relationship might not be present, but the emotional and mental attraction is still there. That’s the love that I like reading about. Lucien & Makeda story isn’t hearts & rainbows. The attraction was their from the very beginning but being two cerebral people did not help them at all. Lucien being as old as he is, is attracted to the human. Something that he didn’t want, but he couldn’t deny her brains is what pushed him over the edge. Makeda is a type A personality. She knows what she wants, she’s blunt, doesn’t believe in small talk. Her family knows the existence of vampires, her dad is under a powerful vampire aegis means Makeda gets to work on her life’s work in a wonderful lab. When news comes to certain allies regarding Elixir Makeda name is out their for her brilliance in studying hematology. She moves to California working with Lucien who doesn’t make it easy for her at all.

I love how Elizabeth creates these strong women characters. Its such a breath of fresh air reading about women who we can look up to. Not only is Makeda smart, but she’s resilient in her human life as well as her new born vampire life. She doesn’t take much, and opens up to Lucien. He’s not without fault, he’s still dealing with the death of a lover from a few years ago. He is dealing with his age, and how at his age he’s tired, but finding Makeda awoke something in him. This book had a good cast of characters. Alot of information being thrown out there, and made me want to visit some of these places as well.

I won’t go far into detail, but I really enjoyed it. It made me go on a binge read of the next books in the series to catch up on. I hope I see some of these people in the future. I highly recommend this series!

In the elemental world, reputation is everything, but gaining it can get you killed.

Setting up shop as an antiquities hunter means nothing if you don’t have clients. Benjamin Vecchio, nephew of a famed vampire assassin, is the subject of widespread speculation, but so far that speculation hasn’t translated into work.
What Ben needs is a job. A big job. A profitable job.

A legendary job.

Finding the lost sword of Brennus the Celt, the mythical Raven King of the British Isles, would make Ben’s reputation in the immortal world, but it could also draw dangerous attention. The Raven King’s gold hoard isn’t famous for being easy to find. Luckily, Ben has his own legend at his side.

Tenzin is a wind vampire who doesn’t like digging, but she’s more than happy to let Ben do the dirty work while she provides the muscle he needs to make other immortals pay attention. They’re partners. Or so Ben thinks.

But when finding this treasure puts Tenzin’s future plans at risk, will their partnership survive? Tenzin isn’t used to taking orders from anyone, particularly from a young human who used to be her student. Digging into ancient Scottish history can get you dirty. It can also get you killed.

five-stars

Did I detest a hint of flirting, from Tenzin? Not towards Ben, and Ben being extremely jealous and possessive. FFS, Hunter please put me out of my misery with these two. Let Tenzin take Ben down! We all see it coming, and it better not lead to any fade to black sex scenes either.

Not that I have that out of my system, let’s move on. Another brilliant story with these two. Ben is out in the world making his own name. He’s convinced that he needs to stand on his own two feet. He is partnering up with Tenzin and living together. This job that Ben has taken could prove to be to much. Tenzin tries to warn him, but they get into it, and as usual they work together well.

While these novellas are not much in the grand scheme of things, I’d like to think of them as complete warmups to their full length novels. E.Hunter, if you are reading this then I think 6 or 8 books for them seems adequate enough for me. I enjoyed the mystery/treasure hunting in this one. As usual her places end up on my travel list some day. I love visiting places through her characters eyes. Another great read.

DaywalkerBrynne Kirkland survived a hellish upbringing as a product of a madman’s lab. Tough, driven, and devoted to her work in law enforcement, Brynne has never dared to risk opening her heart to anyone–least of all a handsome immortal from a world on the verge of war against hers.

Atlantean warrior Zael left the intrigue of his realm several lifetimes ago, along with the battles he fought as one of the queen’s legion. As a free-spirited loner walking the fringe of two worlds–that of his secretive and powerful people, and the outside world belonging to mankind and the Breed–it was never his intention to return to combat and bloodshed. Nor had he imagined that he might ever be tempted into anything stronger than desire . . . until he meets Brynne.

Thrust together as allies of the Order in the fight against a diabolical enemy, Zael and Brynne embark on a mission that will ultimately force them to decide between duty to their people, and a passion that defies all bounds.

four-stars

This love story actually began in the last book but Daywalker Brynne Kirkland just got fired from her job at JUSTIS. She is forced to see refuge with the Order and her half-sister Tavia Chase. Atlantean warrior Ekizael just happened to see Brynne at a club and their attraction get the best of them. When Zael sees Brynne in trouble and finds out her secret, it actually bonds them together more closely. See,
Brynne is a Gen One Breedmate who is also a daywalker. The experiments conducted by Dragos had some unfortunate side effects for Brynne, and she harbored that secret form from everyone. Zael didn’t shy away from her and he actually nursed her back to physical and mental health.

Together, they set out to aid Lucan Thorne and The Order by attempting to forge an alliance between the Atlantean Queen and The Order because the Atlantean can help in the war with Opus Nostrum. After the last attack on the JUSTIS building made it obvious that The Order needed all the help they can get.

I enjoyed this book because Brynne fought her feelings for so long. The author made Zael work f or it. Not only were they hot as a pair, but the author used their love journey to advance the plot against the ancients. The audiobook was very entertaining and the narrator made the Brynne feel both strong and capable, yet vulnerable. Zael’s voice radiated strength and gentleness that was perfect to a lonely and isolated Brynne. They were two peas in a pod. There was plenty of action, suspense and foreshadowing for the next book. Certainly the same formula that we have come to expect from Lara Adrian and I can’t wait for the next book.
